Equestrian Regulations

EQU 1 General

EQU 1.1 It is the aim of the competition to judge a rider’s ability to get the best out of an unknown horse in a limited period of time.

EQU 1.2 Making an entry for any competition to which these regulations apply constitutes acceptance of these rules. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure that they are fully conversant with the rules, and the team captain’s responsibility to ensure that copies of the rules are given to their members.

EQU 1.3 The aim of the early competitions (Pools and Regional Rounds) is to select the best teams and individuals to progress to the National Finals.

EQU 1.4 In the interests of fairness riders must not compete on their own horse or any horse they have owned or competed on outside of student riding in the last five years at any stage of the competition.

EQU 1.5 All riders must treat the horses in a fair and sporting manner. Any abuse or violence will not be tolerated and may lead to elimination at the discretion of the judges.

EQU 1.6 Current British Dressage and British Showjumping rules will apply regarding tack to be used except that the judges must allow horses to wear boots/bandages and martingales etc. without penalty if it is the wish of the owner of the horse. Bridles used at matches should feature a single rein only. The organisers must check the tack of the horses before the competition starts. Only the person in charge of the horses may change the setting of the horses’ tack (including the girth) with the exception of the length of the stirrup leathers. Should riders wish to change anything other than the length of the stirrup leathers they should approach the warm up steward with their request.

EQU 1.7 The tack of the horse must not be changed after the first rider has ridden the horse. The only exception to this may be the change of stirrup leathers if they are not long enough for the rider’s leg or if the stirrup irons are too narrow to allow the riders boot to fit safely in. In the case of breaking tack during the competition the rider may have a restart for that phase unless they show an intention of finishing the phase.

EQU 1.8 All horses must be demonstrated before the Dressage and Showjumping in the tack and equipment that they will compete in (including spurs and/or whip). Showjumping horses must jump one upright, one oxer and any combinations before the first rider mounts. These should be fences with fillers and venues may choose to demonstrate horses over more fences if the fillers are likely to cause a problem, but all horses must be demonstrated over at least the minimum specified. (See National Final specific regulations for exceptions to this).

EQU 1.9 Neither the organisers of the Championships, nor the panel, nor BUCS, nor the agent, employee or representative of these bodies accepts any liability for any accident, loss, damage, injury or illness to horses, owners, riders, spectators, or any person or property.

EQU 2.1 Hats All riders must wear hats which meet one of the following standards:

• British: All PAS (1998 or 2011) 015, VG1 – Provided they are BSI Kitemarked
• European: VG1 – Provided they are BSI Kitemarked
• American: All SEI ASTM F1163 04a onwards and SNELL E2001 and SNELL E2016
• Australian and New Zealand: AS/NZS 3838 2003 onwards

EQU 2.1.1 Riding hat harnesses must be properly adjusted and fastened.

EQU 2.1.2 In the interest of safety, long hair should be tidy and secured appropriately for both Dressage and Showjumping.

EQU 2.1.3 BUCS shall not suffer any liability (whether for death or personal injury or for any consequential or indirect loss suffered) in relation to protective helmets worn by riders and in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing any failure by riders to wear protective helmets to the above standards.

EQU 2.2 Riders should be smartly dressed. Jackets should be tweed or any conservative dark colour providing they are not multi-coloured, boldly striped or British Team Colours. Shirts must be worn with a tie or stock. Breeches/jodhpurs should be white, pale yellow or fawn in colour. Plain black or brown long boots or Jodhpur boots with matching black or brown leather gaiters (but not suede half chaps) must be worn. Gloves are compulsory for Dressage and are recommended for Showjumping.

EQU 2.3 Body protectors It is recommended that body protectors be worn for the Showjumping phase to a minimum of BETA 2009 safety level 3. Captains should check with the riding centre where they are organising competitions to ensure that these are not already compulsory and note EQU 4.2.5 for requirements for notifying opposition institutions of this.

EQU 2.3.1 BUCS will confirm on an annual basis whether any Regional Round or National Final venues shall require the compulsory use of body protectors.

EQU 2.4 Air jackets Competitors are permitted to wear a dark coloured air jacket for both phases. The competitor must provide the saddle attachment and no extra warm up time will be given to allow for fixing the saddle attachment.

EQU 2.5 Spurs may be worn if the owner of the horse permits. Where the owner does permit spurs, for the Dressage phase these must meet current British Dressage (BD) rules and for the Showjumping phase these must meet current British Showjumping (BS) rules. If, in the opinion of the judge(s), spurs are misused, the rider may be eliminated.

EQU 2.6 One whip may be used if the owner of the horse permits. Where the owner does permit use of a whip, for the Dressage phase the whip can be of any length and for the Showjumping phase a whip must meet current British Showjumping (BS) rules. It may be carried in either hand, but must be in the rein hand while saluting. It may not be picked up if dropped during the test. If, in the opinion of the judge(s), the whip is misused, the rider may be eliminated.

EQU 2.7 Dress at Prize-givings Prize-givings are important to organisers and sponsors. Competitors are requested to be neatly and tidily dressed in competition kit or University/College kit.

EQU 2.8 Advertising and logos

EQU 2.8.1 Identification of the manufacturer of clothing and equipment may appear only once per clothing item (breeches, gloves, shirt, headwear or on jackets at the height of breast pockets) on a surface area not exceeding three square centimetres.

EQU 2.8.2 Identification of sponsors may appear on a surface area not exceeding:

• 80 square centimetres on each of the two sides of jackets or top garments at the height of breast pockets;
• 200 square centimetres on one arm only of top garment;
• For the show jumping only, the Competitor may bear the logo of a sponsor vertically in the middle of protective headwear. The logo must not be longer than 25cm or wider than 5cm;
• For the show jumping only the Competitor may bear the logo of a sponsor on the left leg of the riding breeches. The logo must not be longer than 20cm or wider than 4cm;
• 16 square centimetres on both sides of shirt collar.

EQU 2.8.3 There should be no University/College logo or name visible on any rider clothing during competition.

EQU 3.1 All individuals in a team must be from the same Playing Entity and meet the individual eligibility requirements of REG 4.

EQU 3.2 Where an institution/Playing Entity has more than one team, and more than one competition scheduled across these teams on a given day, priority must be given to the highest ranked team and then in descending order through their teams should the institution/Playing Entity be unable to fulfil all scheduled competitions. For example, if an institution/Playing Entity’s first and second teams are both scheduled to compete on the same day, the institution/Playing Entity may NOT field their second team for if they will not be fielding their first team. Institutions/Playing Entities found to have fielded a team in breach of this regulation will have any points earned by that team and their individual riders at the competition removed. Where applicable these points will be re-allocated to the other competing teams and individuals.

EQU 3.3 Each team will consist of four riders, with all individual scores counting to the team score.

EQU 3.3.1 Teams may compete with only three riders, however they will incur a penalty fourth score which shall be the worst score of all riders in each discipline plus 30 penalties.

EQU 3.3.2 Teams cannot compete with two riders or fewer. Institutions/Playing Entities with multiple teams should be aware of EQU 3.2

EQU 3.4 Individuals may not compete for different teams on the same day.

EQU 3.5 Ranking lists

EQU 3.5.1 Prior to the start of the season, each Playing Entity must submit a ranked list of all the riders they expect to use across their teams. These lists must be submitted no later than the deadline in the BUCS Sport Specific Affiliations Document and must feature enough individuals to field the number of teams entered. Failure to submit this information will result in sanctions being imposed as outlined in the BUCS Sport Specific Affiliations Document. The ranking lists will be available here for ease of reference.

EQU 3.5.2 Following the initial ranking deadline passing, ranking lists will be locked and cannot be changed except in the following circumstances:

EQU 3.5.2.1 There shall be one re-ranking window, during which Playing Entities can change the ranked order of existing riders on their ranking list and/or remove riders from their ranking list. The dates for the re-ranking window will be displayed in the BUCS Sport Specific Affiliations Document. Changes to ranking lists made during a re-ranking window will only come into effect at the end of the window.

EQU 3.5.2.2 Institutions/Playing Entities may request to add riders in at any position on their ranking list at any time during the season by emailing [email protected]. Requests must be submitted to, and approved by, the BUCS Executive in advance of the riders competing in any competitions so they should be made as far in advance of affected competitions as possible.

EQU 3.5.3 The order on their ranking list shall be determined by each institution/Playing Entity with their best rider ranked as 1 and the second best as 2 and so on. The order is at the discretion of each institution/Playing Entity. It does not need to be in accordance with any external results or ranking systems, but institutions/Playing Entities may be requested to justify their ranking lists to the BUCS Executive. Failure to justify the rank order or institutions/Playing Entities deliberately ranking out of order will be referred to the BUCS Executive for disciplinary action.

EQU 3.5.4 Teams for a competition day (across all Pools, Regional Rounds or National Finals) must be selected in rank order. This applies across all teams. For example, a rider ranked number 8 cannot ride in the 1st team if the rider ranked number 7 is riding for a lower team's match that day.

EQU 3.5.5 No rider ranked (as per the published ranking list at the time) at number 4 or above shall be eligible to ride below the 1st team. No rider ranked (as per the published ranking list at the time) at number 8 or above shall be eligible to ride below the 2nd team, and so on throughout a Playing Entity’s teams.

EQU 3.6 It is in a Championship team’s best interests to keep the same team throughout their Pool matches so that if the team fails to qualify as a whole some of its members may have more chance of qualifying to the Regional Round as individuals.

EQU 3.6.1 Once the competition has progressed to the Regional Rounds, should a rider qualify for the Championship Regional Rounds as an individual, they must take up this place and cannot compete for a team in the Trophy Regional Rounds regardless of their ranking at the time.

EQU 3.6.2 Once the competition has progressed to the National Finals, should a rider qualify for the Championship National Finals as an individual, they must take up this place and cannot compete for a team in the Trophy National Finals regardless of their ranking at the time.

EQU 3.7 Institutions/Playing Entities suspected of exploiting these team selection and ranking list regulations and/or manipulating their ranking list could face disciplinary action under REG 5.

EQU 4.1 Pools

EQU 4.1.1 There shall be two levels of competition: Championship and Trophy. The Championship is only open to 1st teams and the Trophy is only open to 2nd teams or lower.

EQU 4.1.2 BUCS will organise teams into regionalised Pools on an annual basis. There is no guarantee that the Pools will be the same each year.

EQU 4.1.3 At both Championship and Trophy Level there shall be up to six regions, each containing up to 16 teams per Pool.

EQU 4.1.4 Should the Championship be oversubscribed, priority will be given to teams who competed in the previous season and then any spaces will be filled from the remaining teams by random draw.

EQU 4.1.5 When the Trophy is populated, priority will be given to 2nd teams, then 3rd teams, then 4th teams and so on as required. Should the situation arise where there are more teams of the same level (3rd team for example) than there are available spaces, then these teams will be allocated by a random draw.

EQU 4.1.6 At Trophy level, if an institution/Playing Entity has multiple teams entered they shall not be placed into different regions.

EQU 4.1.7 Any teams not initially allocated to a Pool will remain on a waiting list and if any teams withdraw prior to final Pools being published then teams on the waiting list shall be invited to join if a space in an appropriate Pool becomes available.

EQU 4.1.8 Information regarding in what circumstances a team can be withdrawn and if they will be eligible for an entry fee refund or charged any penalty fees can be found in the 2023-24 season specific Cancellation, Withdrawals and Refunds Policy.

EQU 4.1.9 No matches should be arranged until BUCS has published the final Pools.

EQU 4.2 Match dates and venues

EQU 4.2.1 When the final Pools are published, teams within each Pool will be assigned a Hosting Window within which they must host their home match. Each team must host their home match within the specified Hosting Window unless they obtain the mutual agreement of the Athletic Unions of all other participating institutions/Playing Entities in this match to host on a date during another Hosting Window and ensure that it won’t clash with any other matches in the Hosting Window which they are looking to move to which these teams may be involved in and inform BUCS of this.

EQU 4.2.2 For 2023-24 the Hosting Windows are as follows:

• Hosting Window 1: Wednesday 25 October 2023 to Friday 24 November 2023
• Hosting Window 2: Saturday 25 November 2023 to Friday 26 January 2024
• Hosting Window 3: Saturday 27 January 2024 to Friday 23 February 2024
• Hosting Window 4: Saturday 24 February 2024 to Friday 22 March 2024

EQU 4.2.3 Each institution/Playing Entity’s Athletic Union must confirm all home match dates and venues, regardless of hosting window, to BUCS via the online form by the deadline stated in the Sport Specific Affiliations Document. Failure to do so will lead to sanctions as outlined in the BUCS Sport Specific Affiliations Document and possibly further disciplinary action.

EQU 4.2.4 After match dates and venues have been published by BUCS, institutions/Playing Entities can change a match date if they obtain the mutual agreement of the Athletic Unions of all other participating institutions/Playing Entities in the match and inform BUCS of this. Any amendment to a venue that does not cause unreasonable impact upon travel arrangements and is communicated more than 48 hours (outside of weekends and bank holidays) before the match is scheduled to take place does not need to be agreed but must be communicated in writing to the Athletic Unions of all other participating institutions/Playing Entities.

EQU 4.2.5 Each institution/Playing Entity’s Athletic Union must re-confirm any home match dates and venues by email to other Athletic Unions at least 14 days before each match. At this time, institutions/Playing Entities should also confirm the time that the draw will take place, as well as any weight restrictions and/or body protector requirements of the venue. (Note EQU 6.8)

EQU 4.2.6 All Pool matches must be completed by the final date of the fourth hosting window. No extension will be given after this date.

EQU 4.2.7-EQU 4.2.8 UNDER REVIEW

EQU 4.2.7 If a team fails to organise a match or cancels it without extenuating circumstances relating to the venue/hosting of the event, they will be eliminated from the Championships and any points they have been awarded will be re-allocated amongst the other teams as though the offending team had not taken part in any of the Mini League matches. Individuals from such teams therefore cannot qualify for further stages of the competition.

EQU 4.2.8 Any matches which do not go ahead and do not fall under EQU 4.2.7 shall be declared void.

EQU 4.2.9 Institutions/Playing Entities can share venues where necessary in order to host matches, though it is preferred that different venues are used where possible.

EQU 4.2.10 Institutions/Playing Entities must ensure that their venue has, or can find, enough horses and that they are capable of fulfilling their role in competition when booking the venue. It is recommended that a copy of these rules and the appropriate technical rules be given to the venue.

EQU 4.2.10.1 In Pool matches four horses shall be used and each horse will be ridden by three competitors. The standard of the horses must be as similar as possible. Where possible the same horses should not be used for the Dressage and Showjumping phases. If this is not possible then riders must not ride the same horse for both phases.

EQU 4.2.11 Pool matches must be organised so that the Dressage element is followed by the Showjumping.

EQU 4.2.12 BUCS does not determine weight restrictions, these can vary from centre to centre. Each institution/Playing Entity’s Athletic Union must advise of any weight restrictions when confirming match dates to their opposition as per EQU 4.2.5.

EQU 4.2.13 Whilst BUCS recommends the use of body protectors (EQU 2.3), BUCS does not determine requirements for body protectors for Pool matches, these can vary from centre to centre. Each institution’s Athletic Union must advise whether body protectors are compulsory when confirming match dates to their opposition as per EQU 4.2.5.

EQU 4.2.14 The host team organiser must know the whereabouts of the nearest casualty department and have directions readily available for competitors. If possible, members of the St John Ambulance or equivalent should be present for the Showjumping. In all cases, the host team organiser should make themselves known to the appointed First Aider at the centre and be aware of their location during the competition.

EQU 4.3 Judges

EQU 4.3.1 It is the host institution/Playing Entity’s responsibility to inform their opposition of the officiating arrangements in advance of the event.

EQU 4.3.2 One Dressage judge is required per match. Dressage judges must be of British Dressage List 6 or higher.

EQU 4.3.2.1 If it is not possible to appoint a judge from the designated British Dressage judges lists, an institution/Playing Entity should declare the judge and their level of qualification to the BUCS Executive in advance of the event being held. The BUCS Executive will make a decision on whether the judge can officiate. If approved by the BUCS Executive the judge will be able to officiate.

EQU 4.3.3 The rules and basic ideas behind BUCS Equestrian should be explained to the Dressage judge by the host institution/Playing Entity, stressing that whist it is the way the horse is going that should be judged during the Dressage test, the aim of the competition is to assess each rider’s ability to get the best out of a strange horse in a limited period of time.

EQU 4.3.4 One Showjumping judge is required per match. The Showjumping may be judged on style by the Dressage judge, a listed riding clubs equitation judge, a qualified instructor, an accredited coach, or a suitably qualified person to be approved by BUCS.  If the Dressage judge is unable or unwilling to judge this element, it is the responsibility of the organising institution/Playing Entity to inform all opposition institutions/Playing Entities of this.  

EQU 4.3.5 Although the Showjumping judge need not be on the British Showjumping Judges Panel, they must be conversant with the rules. It is the responsibility of the host institution/Playing Entity to ensure that this is the case.

EQU 4.4 The Draw

 

EQU 4.4.1 At all competitions, all riders should be assigned a number at the first draw which must be worn throughout. During the competition they will be known as that number with no reference to name or institution/Playing Entity to be present on any paperwork for judges. Riders should keep the same number throughout any one match for both phases.

EQU 4.4.1.1 Host teams shall be responsible for providing the numbers to be worn, which should be boot numbers, cross country bib style numbers or a suitable equivalent.

EQU 4.4.2 Each horse should be assigned a letter.

EQU 4.4.3 All draws will take place in the presence of all the team captains and will be performed no earlier than the time stated by the organiser on the invitations to compete. If any team has failed to arrive by that time, their draw may be performed on their behalf and without the presence of their captain.

EQU 4.4.4 The draw for the Dressage will be held in alphabetical team order and that of the Showjumping in reverse alphabetical team order.

EQU 4.4.5 Teams captains will draw numbers 1, 2, 3 in the order given in EQU 4.4.3. This relates to the team order shown on the running order below. Each team rider must then draw A, B, C or D. This relates to the horse that they will ride for that phase. A venue can reasonably request that the shortest or lightest rider from each team rides a specific horse of the group but not specify further requests for types of rider.

EQU 4.4.6 The running order should be arranged as follows:

EQU 4.5 Dressage for Pools

EQU 4.5.1 The Dressage tests for Pools will be available to download from the BUCS website Equestrian pages each season. There shall be separate tests for the Championship and Trophy competitions.

EQU 4.5.2 Each competitor will be allowed a maximum amount of time in which to warm up, 10 minutes for the first competitor on each horse and seven minutes for subsequent competitors on each horse. The home team is responsible for providing a timekeeper. Outside of warm up time riders must be on a loose rein. Should the venue have different rules relating to warm ups of horses, these will take precedence as long as they do not exceed the time allowed above.

EQU 4.5.3 The horses are to be demonstrated by a non-competing individual before the first rider mounts to the level of the test that they will be used for. If it is not possible for the horses to be demonstrated by a non-competing individual then the home team should demonstrate the horses they are not riding in the competition. The demonstration should take place in the competition arena and the time of this demonstration will be about five minutes. The horses should be sufficiently warmed up before this demonstration.

EQU 4.5.4 Pool Dressage tests may be commanded.

EQU 4.5.5 A rider must start the Dressage phase in order to participate in the Showjumping phase. As such, a rider who withdraws from the Dressage phase prior to entering the arena will not be permitted to take part in the Showjumping phase. However, a rider who is eliminated or retires during the Dressage phase (i.e. after entering the arena) shall be permitted to take part in the Showjumping phase. (Note EQU 4.8.2–4.8.3 for implications on scoring and results).

EQU 4.6 Showjumping for Pools

EQU 4.6.1 In order that the Showjumping phase is to have sufficient importance the course should be as demanding as possible within the capabilities of the horses used. The maximum height for Pool matches is 90cm for the Championship and 85cm for the Trophy. The course should be designed in consultation with the riding centre staff to meet the standards of the horses, but should have a minimum of seven fences including at least one double, at least two spreads and at least one related distance of four strides or less. A course that tests the rider’s ability is essential. It is recommended that a stile or dogleg be used in the course.

EQU 4.6.2 The course builder should be a competent person, approved by the riding centre. They should be familiar with British Showjumping course building guidelines.

EQU 4.6.3 Each competitor will be allowed a maximum of five minutes warm up time and a maximum of four specified practice jumps. The practice fences may, at the judge’s discretion be part of the course. At the start of the practice period, the direction for jumping the practice fences must be specified to all competitors. The practice fences must be jumped in the direction specified – failure to do so will result in elimination from the jumping element. Should the venue have different rules regarding number of jumps allowed these will take precedence as long as they do not exceed the numbers above.

EQU 4.6.4 The Showjumping judge will award each competitor a mark out of 10 for each fence as well as collective style marks similar to those used for the Dressage test. The following penalties will then be deducted for jumping errors:

EQU 4.6.5 If a horse is eliminated in the Showjumping with all riders, the judge must allow all riders who have ridden the eliminated horse another chance to ride an alternative horse. The alternative horse should, preferably, be one that has not already been used for the Showjumping phase. If no such horse is available then one that has already jumped may be used over a shortened course if necessary. If any rider is unable to ride the alternative horse due to injury, the collective marks added to the fence that all riders reached will be used as the style mark.

EQU 4.6.6 The Showjumping judge(s) should be approached with any complaints or concerns about a competitor’s ability to jump. The judge(s) may prevent a rider from jumping if they consider the rider to be incapable of managing the course set. The rider may refer such a decision to the Jury of Appeal if they consider the decision to be unfair.

EQU 4.7 Objections at Pool matches

EQU 4.7.1 If there are any protests or complaints at Pool matches, a Jury of Appeal shall be convened at the match to consider these. The Jury of Appeal shall consist of all the Team Captains present and may call upon the judge(s) for advice if necessary.

EQU 4.7.2 Only Team Captains may lodge protests or complaints. They must be in writing and accompanied by a deposit of £10. The deposit is forfeited unless the objection is upheld or it is decided that there were good and reasonable grounds for lodging an objection.

EQU 4.7.3 Protests concerning an abuse of regulations occurring during a competition must be made no later than 30 minutes after the alleged abuse occurred.

EQU 4.7.4 Protests concerning the horses must be made within 10 minutes of their demonstration.

EQU 4.7.5 A team cannot lodge a protest or complaint concerning the suitability of a Judge appointed in accordance with the regulations.

EQU 4.7.6 Protests or complaints concerning the final results are not referred to a Jury of Appeal and instead follow the process and associated deadline as outlined under EQU 4.8.7.

EQU 4.8 Scoring and results

EQU 4.8.1 Teams arriving late for a match shall be deemed absent if they arrive more than one hour after the stated time for the draw. The telephone numbers of the venue and the captain of the host team should be included in the details sent to each institution/Playing Entity.

EQU 4.8.2 For each phase, the rider having the best score on each horse will be given zero penalties and the other riders of that horse will be given the number of penalties equal to the difference between their score and the best score on that horse. This process shall be known as differencing the scores. Eliminated and retired riders shall be given the worst difference penalties of all the riders on that horse plus an additional 30 penalties.

EQU 4.8.3 Each team member must start both the Dressage and Showjumping phases in order to receive a final individual score and placing. However, if the rider only completes the dressage phase, the score can count for the team. If they do not start the Showjumping phase, they will incur a penalty score which shall be the worst score of all riders in that discipline plus 30 penalties.

EQU 4.8.4 Individual Placings Individuals will be ranked based on their total penalties, with the lowest score being the best. An individual’s total penalties will be the sum of their Dressage and Showjumping difference penalties.

EQU 4.8.4.1 If any individual scores are equal, they shall be split using the following sequential process:

EQU 4.8.4.1.1 The differenced Dressage penalties (not marks, i.e. lowest difference=highest placed);

EQU 4.8.4.1.2 The Dressage and Showjumping collective marks combined;

EQU 4.8.4.1.3 If, however, they are still equal they shall share a rank and the placing points shall be divided equally between them (note EQU 4.8.6.2).

EQU 4.8.5 Team Placings Teams will be ranked based on their total penalties, with the lowest score being the best. A team’s total penalties will be the sum of all four Dressage difference penalties and all four Showjumping difference penalties.

EQU 4.8.5.1 If the team scores are equal, they shall be split using the following sequential process:

EQU 4.8.5.1.1 The total of the best difference Dressage penalties (i.e. the higher placed team after Dressage);

EQU 4.8.5.1.2 The sum of all four riders’ collective marks from the Dressage and Showjumping phases;

EQU 4.8.6 In order to determine the qualifying team and individuals (Championship only) for the Regional Round, points will be awarded for placing at Pool matches as follows:

EQU 4.8.6.1 For tied placing the points are shared — i.e. if two individuals are tied for third place the points of third and fourth are shared between the two competitors, each of them receiving 7 points.

EQU 4.8.7 Each home team’s Athletic Union is responsible for completing and submitting via e-mail to [email protected] and all opposition Athletic Unions of the other teams who took part in the match the full Excel scoresheet by the relevant deadline stated in the BUCS Sport Specific Affiliations Document. Failure to do so will lead to sanctions as outlined in the BUCS Sport Specific Affiliations Document and possibly further disciplinary action.

EQU 4.8.7.1 The result will stand unless a visiting team challenges the result sheet in which instance it will become a provisional result until checked and the placings confirmed by BUCS.

EQU 4.8.7.2 BUCS will publish submitted scoresheets, however all teams must keep a copy of all final results sheets and should ensure to keep a record of all the penalties including collective marks at all the matches.

EQU 4.8.8 In the Championship Pools, the three teams with the most points and the six individuals, not from these teams, with the highest points will qualify for the Regional Round. In the Trophy Pools, only the three teams with the most points will qualify for the Regional Round.

EQU 4.8.8.1 If two or more teams or individuals are on equal points at the completion of the Pools, they will be split by the sum of their total penalties from all the matches.

EQU 4.8.9 BUCS will publish a list of confirmed qualifiers from the Pools on the BUCS website Equestrian pages in order that institutions/Playing Entities are then able to enter for the Regional Round.

EQU 5.1 Regional Round matches will be organised by BUCS and Regional Organisers. The following season's Regional Organisers will be appointed from the six Championship and six Trophy teams that qualified to the National Finals in the previous season.

EQU 5.1.1 Individual Championship Regional Round BUCS reserves the right to host an Individual Championship Regional Round event in any season, should the organisation deem appropriate to do so. This event will only be for individuals from institutions/Playing Entities not entered in the Pools and each institution/Playing Entity will be capped to two entries. Extra places may be allocated on a first come, first served basis to a maximum of three riders when there are less than 15 individuals entered for the event.

EQU 5.2 Teams or individuals may not compete in the Regional Round if their Athletic Union has not submitted their entry on BUCS Play by the deadline stated on the BUCS website Equestrian pages.

EQU 5.3 All competing teams must bring at least one person to help organise the Regional Round event that they are competing at. Failure to provide a volunteer will result in a fine of £100.

EQU 5.4 Venues

EQU 5.4.1 BUCS shall assign venues for each Regional Round match.

EQU 5.4.1.1 Where necessary venues previously used in Pool matches may be used in order to host matches.

EQU 5.4.2 BUCS will ensure that each venue has, or can find, enough horses and that they are capable of fulfilling their role in competition when booking the venue. A copy of these rules and the appropriate technical rules shall also be given to the venue by BUCS.

EQU 5.4.2.1 In Championship Regional Round matches six horses will be used and in Trophy Regional Round matches four horses will be used for each of the Dressage and the Showjumping phases. The standard of the horses must be as similar as possible. Where possible the same horses shall not be used for both phases. If this is not possible then riders must not ride the same horse for the Dressage and the Showjumping phases.

EQU 5.4.3 Regional Round matches shall be organised so that the Dressage element is followed by the Showjumping.

EQU 5.4.4 BUCS does not determine weight restrictions, these can vary from centre to centre, however BUCS will advise of any weight restrictions to participating institutions/Playing Entities.

EQU 5.4.5 Whilst BUCS recommends the use of body protectors (EQU 2.3), BUCS does not determine requirements for body protectors for Regional Round matches, these can vary from centre to centre, however BUCS will advise participating institutions/Playing Entities whether body protectors are compulsory.

EQU 5.4.6 The Regional Organiser must know the whereabouts of the nearest casualty department and have directions readily available for competitors. If possible, members of the St John Ambulance or equivalent will be present for the Showjumping. In all cases, the Regional Organiser should make themselves known to the appointed First Aider at the centre and be aware of their location during the competition.

EQU 5.5 Judges Regulations governing Regional Rounds shall be as per EQU 4.3 for Pools, with the following variations/exceptions:

EQU 5.5.1 Two Dressage judges will be used at the Regional Round matches and the scores of the two judges shall be averaged and then differenced. Dressage judges must be of British Dressage List 5 or higher.

EQU 5.5.1.1 If it is not possible to appoint two judges of British Dressge List 5 or higher, Regional Organisers may request the permission of the BUCS Executive to use a British Dressage List 6 judge, or judges, in advance of the event being held. The BUCS Executive will make a decision on whether the judge(s) can officiate. If approved by the BUCS Executive the judge(s) will be able to officiate.

EQU 5.5.2 Two Showjumping judges will be used at the Regional Round matches and the scores of the two judges shall be averaged and then differenced.

EQU 5.6 The Draw

EQU 5.6.1 At all competitions, all riders should be assigned a number at the first draw which must be worn throughout. During the competition they will be known as that number with no reference to name or institution/Playing Entity to be present on any paperwork for judges. Riders should keep the same number throughout any one match for both phases.

EQU 5.6.1.1 BUCS shall be responsible for providing the numbers to be worn, which should be boot numbers, cross country bib style numbers or a suitable equivalent.

EQU 5.6.2 Each horse should be assigned a letter.

EQU 5.6.3 All draws will take place in the presence of all the team captains and will be performed no earlier than the time stated by the Regional Organiser on the invitations to compete. If any team has failed to arrive by that time, their draw may be performed on their behalf. The draw for the Dressage will be held in alphabetical team order and that of the Showjumping in reverse alphabetical team order.

EQU 5.6.4 Championship Regional Round running order Teams captains will draw numbers 1, 2, 3 in the order given in EQU 5.6.3. This relates to the number shown on the running order below. Each rider must then draw A, B, C or D. This relates to the horse that they will ride for that phase. Individuals will draw both a letter, E or F, and number, 1, 2, 3 relating to what and when they will ride. Individuals from the same institution/Playing Entity cannot ride against each other.

EQU 5.6.4.1 The running order should be arranged as follows:

EQU 5.6.5.1 The running order should be arranged as follows:

EQU 5.7 Dressage for Regional Rounds Regulations governing Regional Rounds shall be as per EQU 4.5 for Pools, with the following variations/exceptions:

EQU 5.7.1 Dressage tests for Regional Rounds, different to those for the Pools, will be available to download from the BUCS website Equestrian pages each season. There shall be separate tests for the Championship and Trophy competitions.

EQU 5.8 Showjumping for Regional Rounds Regulations governing Regional Rounds shall be as per EQU 4.6 for Pools, with the following variations/exceptions:

EQU 5.8.1 The maximum height for Regional Round matches is 100cm for Championship events and 90cm for Trophy events.

EQU 5.9 Protests at Regional Round matches Regulations governing Regional Rounds shall be as per EQU 4.7 for Pools, with the addition/variation that institutions/Playing Entities represented by individuals may nominate an individual to act as a ‘Team Captain’.

EQU 5.10 Scoring and results Regulations governing Regional Rounds shall be as per EQU 4.8 for Pools, with the following variations/exceptions:

EQU 5.10.1 Each Regional Organiser is responsible for completing and submitting via e-mail to [email protected] and the Athletic Unions of the participating teams the full Excel scoresheet within five days of the match taking place.

EQU 5.10.1.1 The result will stand unless an institution challenges the result sheet in which instance it will become a provisional result until checked and the placings confirmed by BUCS.

EQU 5.10.1.2 BUCS will publish submitted scoresheets, however all teams and individuals must keep a copy of the final results sheet and should ensure to keep a record of all the penalties including collective marks.

EQU 5.10.2 At each Championship Regional Round, the team with the most points and the three individuals, not on the best team, with the highest points will qualify for the National Finals. One of these individuals must have come from the individuals’ section of the Regional Round. At each Trophy Regional Round, only the team with the most points will qualify for the National Finals.

EQU 5.10.3 In a year where BUCS operates an Individual Championship Regional Round event for institutions/Playing Entities not entered in the Pools, the qualifiers will be the top three placings only.

EQU 5.10.4 BUCS will publish a list of confirmed qualifiers for the National Finals from each Regional Round on the BUCS website Equestrian pages.

EQU 6.1 The National Finals will be organised by BUCS.

EQU 6.2 Teams or individuals may not compete in the National Finals if their Athletic Union has not submitted their entry on BUCS Play by the deadline stated on the BUCS website Equestrian pages.

EQU 6.3 Reserve riders for teams should be declared at registration at the event. The reserve rider can only compete in the team in the case of physical inability certified by a doctor. A reserve rider can only substitute a rider in one of the two parts before the beginning of the first round.

EQU 6.4 Both the Championship and Trophy Finals shall consist of two phases – Dressage and Showjumping. All competitors shall compete in both phases. Competitors may not ride the same horse in more than one round of one phase and may not ride the same horse in the Dressage and the Showjumping except where the number of horses limits this, for example in a final round.

EQU 6.5 Both the Championship and Trophy Finals shall be ridden in a knockout system.

EQU 6.5.1 In the Championship, in each round there will be three riders on each horse with the best rider on each horse progressing through to the next round. The standard of the horses shall be as similar as possible. All competitors will be ranked equal at the beginning of each round. Two horses will be used for each of the final rounds.

EQU 6.5.2 In the Trophy, in each round there will be three riders on each horse with the best rider on each horse progressing through to the next round. The standard of the horses shall be as similar as possible. All competitors will be ranked equal at the beginning of each round. Three horses will be used for each of the final rounds.

EQU 6.6 The National Finals shall be run in the style of an AIEC International University Competition. Any circumstances that are not covered by the regulations laid down here will be referred to the current AIEC rules.

EQU 6.7 Riders from the same institution/Playing Entity may not draw against each other at any stage of the National Finals with the exception of when the number of horses limits this.

EQU 6.8 All riders must treat the horses in a fair and sporting manner. Any abuse or violence will lead to elimination of the rider decided by the Jury of Appeal or the judges.

EQU 6.9 Venue

EQU 6.9.1 BUCS shall assign the venue for the National Finals.

EQU 6.9.1.1 Where necessary a venue previously used in Pool matches and/or Regional Round matches may be used.

EQU 6.9.2 BUCS will ensure that the horses are capable of fulfilling their role in the competition and that a copy of these rules and the appropriate technical rules be given to the venue.

EQU 6.9.3 BUCS does not determine weight restrictions, these can vary from centre to centre, however BUCS will advise of any weight restriction to participating institutions/Playing Entities.

EQU 6.9.4 Whilst BUCS recommends the use of body protectors (EQU 2.3), BUCS does not determine requirements for body protectors, these can vary from centre to centre, however BUCS will advise participating institutions/Playing Entities whether body protectors are compulsory at the chosen venue.

EQU 6.9.5 There shall be a qualified Paramedic on site for the Showjumping.

EQU 6.10 Championship Dressage

EQU 6.10.1 The Dressage tests will be available to download from the BUCS website each season.

EQU 6.10.2 Dressage tests may be commanded at all levels with the exception of the first round and fourth round freestyle.

EQU 6.10.3 If two or more riders on the same horse in the same round of dressage have equal marks the rider with the best rider collective marks will proceed to the next round. If they are still equal the rider with the best position mark will proceed to the next round. If there is equality of position mark, the judges will decide which rider qualifies for the next round. The riders who are not qualified after this separation procedure are ranked as first of the non-qualified riders in the round.

EQU 6.10.4 The places of the non-qualifying riders will first be decided by differenced penalties. In the event of equality the collective rider marks will decide. If there is still equality they will be placed equal and the placing shared.

EQU 6.10.5 All competitors will be allowed to ride their horses in the warm up arena for a maximum of five minutes warm up time.

EQU 6.10.6 Championship Dressage Draws

EQU 6.10.6.1 The time of the draw for each round will be published in the National Finals schedule. If any team or individual has failed to arrive by that time, their draw may be performed on their behalf.

EQU 6.10.6.2 All riders shall be assigned a number which must be worn throughout the competition. During the competition they will be known as that number with no reference to name or institution/Playing Entity to be present on any paperwork for judges.

EQU 6.10.6.3 Each horse should be assigned a letter.

EQU 6.10.6.4 Teams will draw a slip dictating when their team will ride. The team members will select a letter each representing their horse. For the Dressage team test team riders will ride horses A – F. Individuals will draw slips representing when they will ride and a letter corresponding to their horse for the first round. Second round and above each rider will draw a slip showing a letter and number which indicates what and when they will ride.

EQU 6.10.6.5 For all rounds a template drawn order, specific to the number of horses and riders required in each round, will be available to view before the allocated draw time.

EQU 6.10.7 First round

EQU 6.10.7.1 All tests will be ridden as a group of three in quadrille style. The test will start from inside the arena boards. Team qualifiers will nominate the trio to ride the team test.

EQU 6.10.7.2 The three individuals qualifying from each Regional Round will ride a team test as a trio. The three individuals qualifying from the Individual Championship Regional Round (should such event take place that year) will ride as a trio. The extra riders from teams qualifying from Regions A, B and C will ride as a trio. The extra riders from teams qualifying from Regions D, E and F will ride as a trio.

EQU 6.10.7.3 Four judges of British Dressage List 5 or above will judge the first round team dressage. Three judges will judge the three riders of the team individually. One horse is judged by one and the same judge during the entire first round. The fourth judge will judge the team as a whole and give a team mark.

EQU 6.10.7.4 The starting order of each trio of horses will be fixed in alphabetical order. The team is not allowed to change this order. Not respecting the announced order will lead to a team mark of zero points for each single lesson which is not performed in the declared order.

EQU 6.10.7.5 The competitor with the highest score on each horse will progress to the second round. If it is necessary to qualify more riders (when the number of competitors is not a multiple of two or three), the non-qualified riders with the lowest difference score to the best rider of the same horse will be qualified.

EQU 6.10.8 Second round

EQU 6.10.8.1 There will be least two judges of British Dressage List 4 or above for the second round.

EQU 6.10.8.2 The competitor with the highest score on each horse will progress to the third round. The best runner up will also progress to the next round as the lucky loser following EQU 6.10.7.5.

EQU 6.10.9 Third round

EQU 6.10.9.1 There will be least two judges of British Dressage List 4 or above for the third round.

EQU 6.10.9.2 The competitor with the highest score on each horse will progress to the final round.

EQU 6.10.10 Final round

EQU 6.10.10.1 There will be least two judges of British Dressage List 4 or above for the final round.

EQU 6.10.10.2 Two horses will be used for the final round of the Dressage. Each of the two riders will ride both horses. A technical test will be performed on one horse and freestyle to music on the other.

EQU 6.11 Championship Showjumping

EQU 6.11.1 Each competitor will be allowed a maximum of five minutes warm up time and a maximum of four specified practice jumps. The practice fences may, at the judge’s discretion, be part of the course. At the start of the practice period, the direction for jumping the practice fences must be specified to all competitors. The practice fences will be flagged and must be jumped in the direction specified – failure to do so will result in elimination from the jumping element.

EQU 6.11.1.1 Should the venue have different rules regarding number of jumps allowed these will take precedence as long as they do not exceed the numbers above.

EQU 6.11.2 The Showjumping will be judged on style by a listed riding clubs equitation judge, a qualified instructor, an accredited coach or a suitably qualified person to be appointed by BUCS. Although the Showjumping judge(s) need not be on the British Showjumping Judges Panel, they must be conversant with the rules.

EQU 6.11.3 A member of BUCS staff or the Tournament Director should be approached with any complaints or concerns about a competitor’s ability to jump, who will then consult the judge(s). The judge(s) may prevent a rider from jumping if they consider the rider to be incapable of managing the course set. The rider may refer such a decision to the Jury of Appeal if they consider the decision to be unfair.

EQU 6.11.4 All horses will be demonstrated before each round of the Showjumping, but will not necessarily jump the whole course before the first rider mounts.

EQU 6.11.5 The course builder should be a British Showjumping course designer. Over the rounds the technical difficulty will increase.

EQU 6.11.6 For all rounds a template drawn order, specific to the number of horses and riders required in each round, will be available to view before the allocated draw time.

EQU 6.11.7 First round

EQU 6.11.7.1 The first round will be judged on style. The Showjumping judge(s) will award each competitor a mark out of 10 for each fence as well as collective rider marks similar to those used for the Dressage. These will then be added together to give the total style mark. The following penalties will then be deducted for jumping errors to give the overall style mark:

EQU 6.11.7.2 The height of the fences will be a maximum of 95cm.

EQU 6.11.7.3 The rider with the best overall style mark on each horse will progress to the second round.

EQU 6.11.7.4 If all riders on the same horse in the same round of Showjumping are eliminated they will re-ride the same course in the same starting order on another horse if there is one available. If another horse is not available and the first horse passed fence five with all riders, then the style mark up to and including this fence will make up the style mark for this horse. In the event that the horse does not make it to this point with all riders then the rider who jumped the most fences will be qualified. If none of the riders went further than all the others, the judges decide who is qualified for the next round. The riders who are not qualified after this separation procedure are ranked as first of the non-qualified riders in the round.

EQU 6.11.7.5 If two or more riders on the same horse have the same overall style mark the rider with the better collective marks will proceed to the next round. If there is equality of the collective marks, the higher total style mark will decide who proceeds. If there is equality of this mark, the judges will decide which rider qualifies for the next round. The riders who are not qualified after this separation procedure are ranked as first of the non-qualified riders in the round.

EQU 6.11.7.6 The places of the non-qualifying riders will first be decided by differenced penalties. In the event of equality the collective marks will decide. If there is still equality they will be placed equal and the placing shared.

EQU 6.11.8 Second round

EQU 6.11.8.1 The second round will be judged primarily on faults with style deciding in the event of equality of faults. Jumping faults in this round and all subsequent rounds will be awarded as follows:

EQU 6.11.8.2 The height of the fences will be a maximum of 105cm.

EQU 6.11.8.3 The best rider on each horse plus the best runner-up with the lowest differenced jumping faults will progress to the third round. In the case of equality of differenced jumping penalties the best runner-up is calculated as the rider with the lowest difference jumping faults and lowest style difference penalties. The places of non-qualifiers will be determined in the same way.

EQU 6.11.9 Third round and final round

EQU 6.11.9.1 These will be judged primarily on faults. In the event of equality of faults time will decide.

EQU 6.11.9.2 The height of the fences in the third round will be approximately 110cm – 115cm unless decided otherwise by the judge(s).

EQU 6.11.9.3 The best rider on each horse in the third round will progress to the final round where they will each ride two horses.

EQU 6.11.9.4 The height of the fences in the final round will be approximately 120cm – 125cm unless decided otherwise by the judge(s).

EQU 6.12 Championship placings At the end of the competition each team and individual competitor will have a placing in each discipline - Dressage and Showjumping - as well as a combined placing.

EQU 6.12.1 Individual placings

EQU 6.12.1.1 Within each discipline, according to the regulations for each round, after each round the non-qualified riders are placed according to their point difference with the best rider on their horse. The rider with the least point difference is placed immediately after the last qualified rider for the next round.

EQU 6.12.1.2 Each round contributes to the discipline results dependent on the number of competitors. For example, the Dressage first round places riders 16^th – 45^th or the Showjumping second round places riders 7^th – 15^th.

EQU 6.12.1.3 Riders who are eliminated are placed after the last non-eliminated rider in the round.

EQU 6.12.1.4 Riders who retire during their ride will be placed after all other riders of this round including all eliminated riders.

EQU 6.12.1.5 Exceptions to EQU 6.12.1.4 If a rider decides to retire because there is no more theoretical possibility for them to be the winner or placed second on the horse in that round, the rider will be placed equal with all the eliminated riders of this round, or in the case there are no eliminated riders in this round, they will be placed above other riders that have retired. This rule is meant to reward fair treatment of the horse.

EQU 6.12.1.6 When a rider retires or is forced to retire before they start riding, they will be placed last of all riders in that round. A ride is considered to have started after the judges have been saluted.

EQU 6.12.1.7 Where two or more riders are equal on their point difference, the higher rider collective marks in that round will decide who is placed higher. If the collective marks are the same then the placing is shared.

EQU 6.12.1.8 Riders will receive points according to their placing in each discipline. 1^st place will receive 1 point, 2^nd place 2 points, 3^rd place 3 points and so on. When riders share a placing, the riders receive points equal to the sum of the placings occupied by the riders divided by the number of riders with the same result. For example, if four riders are placed joint 20^th, the points given to each rider will be 21.5 points ([20+21+22+23] / 4).

EQU 6.12.1.9 Individual combined placings For the individual combined placing, the points scored by each rider in each discipline are totalled. The rider having the least points is the winner of the combined placing. When two or more riders have the same amount of points, the best ranked rider in dressage will be ranked higher. An individual must start both the Dressage and Showjumping phases in order to receive a combined placing.

EQU 6.12.2 Team placings

EQU 6.12.2.1 Team Dressage placings Teams will receive points according to their ranking in the first round of Dressage. 1^st place will receive 3 points, 2^nd place 6 points, 3^rd place 9 points and so on. These points are added to the individual Dressage placing points (EQU 6.12.1.8) for all four riders in each team, with placings determined based on the total points for each team. The team with the least points shall be the winner of the Team Dressage. In the event of equality, the lowest Dressage team total without the team test points included (i.e. just the sum of the individual dressage placing points) will decide.

EQU 6.12.2.2 Team Showjumping placings The individual Showjumping placing points (EQU 6.12.1.8) for all four riders in each team will be combined to give a team points total. The team with the least points shall be the winner of the Team Showjumping. In the event of equality, the sum of all four of the collective rider marks from the first round of Showjumping will decide.

EQU 6.12.2.3 Team combined placings The individual Dressage and Showjumping placing points (EQU 6.12.1.8) for all four riders in each team will be combined to give a team points total. The team with the least points shall be the winner. In the event of equality, the team with the better Team Dressage mark in the first round shall be placed higher. If equality still results, the highest sum of all four of the collective rider marks from the first rounds of the Dressage and Showjumping will decide.

EQU 6.13 Trophy Dressage

EQU 6.13.1 The Dressage tests will be available to download from the BUCS website each season.

EQU 6.13.2 All competitors in all rounds will be allowed to ride their horses in the warm up arena for a maximum of five minutes warm up time.

EQU 6.13.3 For all rounds a template draw and running order, specific to the number of horses and riders required in each round, will be available to view before the allocated draw time.

EQU 6.13.4 First round

For the Dressage team test team riders will ride horses A – F, the fourth riders in each team will ride horses G and H. Individuals will draw slips representing a letter corresponding to their horse for the first round.

EQU 6.13.4.5 The competitor with the highest score on each horse will progress to the final round. The best runner up will also progress to the final round as the lucky loser – this is the first non-qualified rider with the lowest difference score to the best rider of the same horse.

EQU 6.13.4.6 If two or more riders on the same horse in the same round of dressage have equal marks the rider with the best rider collective marks will proceed to the next round. If they are still equal the rider with the best position mark will proceed to the next round. If there is equality of position mark, the judges will decide which rider qualifies for the next round. The riders who are not qualified after this separation procedure are ranked as first of the non-qualified riders in the round.

EQU 6.13.4.7 The places of the non-qualifying riders will first be decided by differenced penalties. In the event of equality the collective rider marks will decide. If there is still equality they will be placed equal and the placing shared.

EQU 6.13.5 Final round

EQU 6.13.5.1 Three horses will be used for the final round. Each horse will be ridden by three competitors. Each rider will draw a slip showing a letter and number which indicates what and when they will ride.

EQU 6.13.5.2 There will be at least two judges of British Dressage List 4 or above for the final round.

EQU 6.13.5.3 The competitors with the highest score on each horse will be placed first, second and third with the highest rider collective marks deciding their placing. The places of those ranked second and third on their horses will first be decided by differenced penalties. In the event of equality the collective rider marks will decide. If there is still equality they will be placed equal and the placing shared.

EQU 6.14 Trophy Showjumping

EQU 6.14.1 Each competitor will be allowed a maximum of five minutes warm up time and a maximum of four specified practice jumps. The practice fences may, at the judge’s discretion be part of the course. At the start of the practice period, the direction for jumping the practice fences must be specified to all competitors. The practice fences must be jumped in the direction specified – failure to do so will result in elimination from the jumping element.

EQU 6.14.1.1 Should the venue have different rules regarding number of jumps allowed these will take precedence as long as they do not exceed the numbers above.

EQU 6.14.2 The Showjumping will be judged on style by a listed riding clubs equitation judge, a qualified instructor, an accredited coach or a suitably qualified person appointed by BUCS. Although the Showjumping judge(s) need not be on the British Showjumping Judges Panel, they must be conversant with the rules.

EQU 6.14.3 A member of BUCS staff or the Tournament Director should be approached with any complaints or concerns about a competitor’s ability to jump, who will then consult the judge(s). The judge(s) may prevent a rider from jumping if they consider the rider to be incapable of managing the course set. The rider may refer such a decision to the Jury of Appeal if they consider the decision to be unfair.

EQU 6.14.4 All horses will be demonstrated before the Showjumping but will not necessarily jump the whole course before the first rider mounts.

EQU 6.14.5 The course builder should be a British Showjumping course designer.

EQU 6.14.6 For all rounds a template drawn order, specific to the number of horses and riders required in each round, will be available to view before the allocated draw time.

EQU 6.14.7 First round

EQU 6.14.7.1 Each horse will be ridden by three competitors.

EQU 6.14.7.2 The first round will be judged on style. The Showjumping judge(s) will award each competitor a mark out of 10 for each fence as well as collective rider marks similar to those used for the Dressage. These will then be added together to give the total style mark. The following penalties will then be deducted for jumping errors to give the overall style mark:

EQU 6.14.7.3 The height of the fences will be a maximum of 90cm.

EQU 6.14.7.4 The rider with the best overall style mark on each horse will progress to the final round. The best runner up will also progress to the final round as the lucky loser – this is the first non-qualified rider with the lowest difference score to the best rider of the same horse.

EQU 6.14.7.5 If two or more riders on the same horse have the same overall style mark the rider with the better collective marks will proceed to the next round. If there is equality of the collective marks, the higher total style mark will decide who proceeds. If there is equality of this mark, the judges will decide which rider qualifies for the next round. The riders who are not qualified after this separation procedure are ranked as first of the non-qualified riders in the round.

EQU 6.14.7.6 The places of the non-qualifying riders will first be decided by differenced penalties. In the event of equality the collective marks will decide. If there is still equality they will be placed equal and the placing shared.

EQU 6.14.8 Teams will draw between 1 and 6 dictating when their team will ride. The team members will each draw a letter representing their horse.

EQU 6.14.9 Final round

EQU 6.14.9.1 Three horses will be used for the final round. Each horse will be ridden by three competitors. Each rider will draw a slip showing a letter and number which indicates what and when they will ride.

EQU 6.14.9.2 The final round will be judged primarily on faults with style deciding in the event of equality of faults. Jumping faults in this round and all subsequent rounds will be awarded as follows:

EQU 6.14.9.3 The height of the fences will be a maximum of 100cm.

EQU 6.14.9.4 The competitors with the highest score on each horse will be placed first, second and third with the highest rider style marks deciding their placing. The places of those ranked second and third on their horses will first be decided by differenced style penalties. In the event of equality the collective rider marks will decide. If there is still equality they will be placed equal and the placing shared.

EQU 6.15 Trophy placings At the end of the competition each team and individual competitor will have a placing in each discipline – Dressage and Showjumping – as well as a combined placing.

EQU 6.15.1 Individual placings

EQU 6.15.1.1 Within each discipline, according to the regulations for each round, after each round the non-qualified riders are placed according to their point difference with the best rider on their horse. The rider with the least point difference is placed immediately after the last qualified rider for the next round.

EQU 6.15.1.2 Each round contributes to the discipline results dependent on the number of competitors. For example, the Dressage first round places riders 10^th – 24^th.

EQU 6.15.1.3 Riders who are eliminated are placed after the last non-eliminated rider in the round.

EQU 6.15.1.4 Riders who retire during their ride will be placed after all other riders of this round including all eliminated riders.

EQU 6.15.1.5 Exceptions to EQU 6.15.1.4 If a rider decides to retire because there is no more theoretical possibility for them to be the winner or placed second on the horse in that round, the rider will be placed equal with all the eliminated riders of this round, or in the case there are no eliminated riders in this round, they will be placed above other riders that have retired. This rule is meant to reward fair treatment of the horse.

EQU 6.15.1.6 When a rider retires or is forced to retire before they start riding, they will be placed last of all riders in that round. A ride is considered to have started after the judges have been saluted.

EQU 6.15.1.7 Where two or more riders are equal on their point difference, the higher rider collective marks in that round will decide who is placed higher. If the collective marks are the same then the placing is shared.

EQU 6.15.1.8 Riders will receive points according to their placing in each discipline. 1^st place will receive 1 point, 2^nd place 2 points, 3^rd place 3 points and so on. When riders share a placing, the riders receive points equal to the sum of the placings occupied by the riders divided by the number of riders with the same result. For example, if four riders are placed joint 20^th, the points given to each rider will be 21.5 points ([20+21+22+23] / 4).

EQU 6.15.1.9 Individual combined placings For the individual combined placing, the points scored by each rider in each discipline are totalled. The rider having the least points is the winner of the combined placing. When two or more riders have the same amount of points, the best ranked rider in dressage will be ranked higher. An individual must start both the Dressage and Showjumping phases in order to receive a combined placing.

EQU 6.15.2 Team placings

EQU 6.15.2.1 Team Dressage placings Teams will receive points according to their ranking in the first round of Dressage. 1^st place will receive 3 points, 2^nd place 6 points, 3^rd place 9 points and so on. These points are added to the individual Dressage placing points (EQU 6.15.1.8) for all four riders in each team, with placings determined based on the total points for each team. The team with the least points shall be the winner of the Team Dressage. In the event of equality, the lowest Dressage team total without the team test points included (i.e. just the sum of the individual dressage placing points) will decide.

EQU 6.15.2.2 Team Showjumping placings The individual Showjumping placing points (EQU 6.15.1.8) for all four riders in each team will be combined to give a team points total. The team with the least points shall be the winner of the Team Showjumping. In the event of equality, the sum of all four of the collective rider marks from the first round of Showjumping will decide.

EQU 6.15.2.3 Team combined placings The individual Dressage and Showjumping placing points (EQU 6.15.1.8) for all four riders in each team will be combined to give a team points total. The team with the least points shall be the winner. In the event of equality, the team with the better Team Dressage mark in the first round shall be placed higher. If equality still results, the highest sum of all four of the collective rider marks from the first rounds of the Dressage and Showjumping will decide.

EQU 6.16 Protests at the National Finals Regulations governing the National Finals shall be as per EQU 4.7 for Pools, with the following variations/exceptions:

EQU 6.16.1 Jury of Appeal For the National Finals the Jury of Appeal will consist of the Tournament Director, a judge determined by the Tournament Director, and a BUCS staff member. Two elected non-competing team managers or representatives may also form part of the Jury of Appeal if such an election takes place during the first draw meeting.

EQU 6.16.2 Institutions/Playing Entities represented by individuals may nominate an individual to act as a ‘Team Captain’.

EQU 6.16.3 The Jury of Appeal will be responsible for:

• Examining and dealing with any complaint and/or protest.
• Taking emergency sanctions against teams or individuals who violate the Equestrian Finals Regulations
• Deciding any other matter not covered by the Equestrian Finals Regulations.

EQU 6.16.4 The Jury of Appeal will refer to:

• The BUCS Equestrian Regulations.
• The BUCS General Regulations.
• The general and technical regulations of AIEC.
• The rules of British Dressage (BD) and British Showjumping (BS).
• Common sense.

EQU 6.16.5 All decisions taken by the Jury of Appeal at the time of the competition are final and made with a simple majority.
