Initiations can have a serious impact on student experiences in higher education sport. Welcome activities and ongoing socials through the year that generate a sense of team and belonging are a strength. But sometimes they can go too far, causing physical and emotional danger and distress. No student should fear or experience this. No student should wish to have such a negative impact on their peers.

Higher education sport and active participation is a place for everyone to feel safe and welcome to participate.  

BUCS member institutions should provide a route for the reporting of incidents; however, we know that there can be circumstances where this is difficult. 
 
Problem events, whether as an initiation or social, and wider problematic behaviours within the culture of a club should be reported. Whether an event or experience you have gone through, know is planned, or have heard about - reporting on it will help protect students.

If a student, their family or friends do not feel that they can report such an issue directly to their institution, we encourage reporting through BUCS. 

  • If you do feel comfortable, you can provide us with personal details. These will not be shared with anyone. This information will help us to take appropriate action such as to follow-up with you if we need to clarify any details or to share support information with you 

  • It is possible to report anonymously and provide any information that identifies you, including your name and email. This will impact the follow-up actions we can take. 

  • If you report anonymously or not, what option you choose doesn't matter. Your report could go a long way in helping us to take the right action and combating problem initiations.
