Swimming

SWI i The BUCS Swimming Championships shall be conducted in accordance with the following BUCS sport specific regulations, the BUCS general regulations, the Laws, Regulations and Technical Rules of the Amateur Swimming Association, FINA Swimming Rules, and the World Para Swimming Rules and Regulations. Further event specific requirements, rules, and regulations will be contained within the entry and pre-event information for each Championship.

SWI ii In the event that these regulations contradict the BUCS general regulations, these BUCS sport specific regulations will supersede, unless specifically stated otherwise.

SWI iii In the event that these regulations contradict those of the Laws, Regulations and Technical Rules of the Amateur Swimming Association, FINA Swimming Rules, and the World Para Swimming Rules and Regulations, these BUCS sport specific regulations will supersede, unless specifically stated otherwise.


SWI 1 Championships BUCS will host annually the following Championships:

SWI 1.1 Long Course Championships The programme shall include the events listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers.

SWI 1.2 Short Course Championships The programme shall include the events listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers.

SWI 1.3 Team Championships The programme shall include the competitions listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers.

SWI 2 Disputes at events In line with REG 4.6.3, should a dispute occur at an event, the event appeal panel for Swimming shall comprise of a BUCS staff member and the Tournament Director.


Individual Championships (Long Course and Short Course Championships)

SWI 3 Entry conditions Long Course and Short Course entry conditions will be published in the relevant Entry and Pre-Event Information documents.

SWI 4 All individual and relay events will be decided by heats and finals, except for the 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle and the 400m Individual Medley, which will be decided on the principle of heat declared winner.


Team Championships

SWI 5 Organisation

SWI 5.1 There shall be 3 divisions for the Championships; Championship, Trophy and Shield.

SWI 5.2 Each division shall consist of a Qualifying Round (Split as Conference A and Conference B) and a Finals over a 2 day period at 1 single venue.

SWI 5.3 For the Qualifying Round within each division, teams will be allocated to the conferences based on finishing positions in the previous season’s Finals. For those teams relegated to lower divisions, overall team times from the previous season’s Qualifying Rounds will be used.

SWI 5.4 All new teams entering the Championships shall join the Shield.

SWI 5.5 The programme for each competition shall consist of the following events for men and women, with each competitor restricted to a maximum of 3 individual events per gala:

4 x 50m Medley Relay
4 x 1 Length Individual Medley
100m Freestyle
100m Butterfly
100m Backstroke
100m Breaststroke
200m Freestyle
50m Butterfly
50m Backstroke
50m Breaststroke
50m Freestyle
4 x 50m Freestyle Relay   

SWI 6 Squad declaration Prior to the Championships each competing institution must submit a Squad Declaration Form listing all potential swimmers including reserves. This must be signed by the Athletic Union to verify eligibility.

SWI 7 Team sheets A Team Sheet must be submitted for the Qualifying Round and for the Final at Registration detailing who will swim each event. Swimmers listed MUST be on the Squad Declaration Form signed off by their Athletic Union.

SWI 8 Team selection

SWI 8.1 Where an institution has entered more than 1 team, the first team should always be the strongest team available to represent that institution.

SWI 8.2 Between the Qualifying Rounds and the Finals, swimmers are permitted to move up to a higher ranked team but no swimmers are permitted to move down to a lower ranked team. For example, if a swimmer has competed for the first team in the Qualifying Rounds on day 1, they will not be eligible for the second team at the Finals on day 2 of the Championships.

SWI 9 Timekeepers All participating teams MUST provide a timekeeper equipped with a stopwatch for BOTH their Qualifying Round and Finals (if they have qualified). Points may be deducted from any teams failing to comply.

SWI 10 Withdrawals and no-shows

SWI 10.1 Teams withdrawing 2 weeks or less before the Championships will be fined £300 and automatically relegated by 1 division for the following season, should they re-enter.

SWI 10.2 Any team who does not attend the Championships without prior notice will be fined £500 and automatically relegated by 1 division for the following season, should they re-enter.

SWI 10.3 No-shows or unauthorised withdrawals for the Finals event on day 2, will be fined £750 and automatically relegated by 1 division for the following season, should they re-enter.

SWI 11 Qualifying Rounds

SWI 11.1 Heat and lane draws The lane draws for the Qualifying Rounds will be made once entries are confirmed. It will be released online in advance of the event.

SWI 11.2 Points and positions

SWI 11.2.1 Finishing positions in each event shall be determined by the time achieved by each swimmer.

SWI 11.2.2 Gala points shall be awarded as follows:
Championship – 8 points for first place down to 1 point for eighth place.
Trophy and Shield – 20 points for first place down to 1 point for twentieth place.

SWI 11.2.3 Relays shall score double points.

SWI 11.2.4 Failing to start or finish an event, or disqualification from an event, shall score zero.

SWI 11.2.5 In the event of a tie in a Qualifying Round Conference a placings countback shall be used. In the event of a tie on placings the fastest combined 4 relay times shall be used.

SWI 11.2.6 Qualification for a 10 lane final The top 5 teams from Championship Conference A and Championship Conference B shall go forward to the Championship Final. The top 5 teams from Trophy Conference A and Trophy Conference B shall go forward to the Trophy Final. The top 5 teams from Shield Conference A and Shield Conference B shall go forward to the Shield Final.

SWI 12 Finals

SWI 12.1 Lane draws and order of events

SWI 12.1.1 Lane draws for the Finals will be done by ranking the teams in Conference A and Conference B for each division and drawing them based on a selection of lanes. These will be published as soon as possible after the results are calculated from the Qualifying Rounds.

SWI 12.1.2 If a team withdraws between a Qualifying Round and the Finals, the next best placed team from the same Conference in the Qualifying Round will be offered the place.

SWI 12.1.3 For each event there will be 6 races; 3 races for each gender with 1 for each Final. The Shield races will be swum first followed by the Trophy and Championship races. For each event the 3 Women’s races will be followed by the 3 Men’s races.

SWI 12.2 Points and positions

SWI 12.2.1 Finishing positions in each event shall be determined by the time achieved by each swimmer.

SWI 12.2.2 Gala points shall be awarded on the basis of 10 points for a win to 1 point for tenth place.

SWI 12.2.3 Relays shall score double points.

SWI 12.2.4 Failing to start or finish an event, or disqualification from an event, shall score zero.

SWI 12.2.5 In the event of a tie in a Final a placings countback shall be used. In the event of a tie on placings the fastest combined 4 relay times shall be used.

SWI 13 Promotion and relegation

SWI 13.1 The top 6 teams from the Trophy Final shall be promoted to the Championship for the next season with the exception of any non-1st teams who are not eligible for promotion. In this instance the next best eligible team(s) from the Trophy Final shall be promoted. Should there be a requirement to then go to the Qualifying Rounds to identify the next best eligible team(s) to be promoted, these will be identified by best overall team time.

SWI 13.2 The bottom 3 teams in Championship Conference A and Championship Conference B shall be relegated to the Trophy for the next season.

SWI 13.3 The top 6 teams from the Shield Final shall be promoted to the Championship for the next season.

SWI 13.4 The bottom 3 teams in Trophy Conference A and Trophy Conference B shall be relegated to the Shield for the next season.
