We are delighted to announce that Women’s Rugby League 9s has been officially adopted into the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme for the 2025-26 season, with anticipated delivery in spring 2026.

This is an exciting moment for the university game and a real celebration of the collaborative work between BUCS, the Rugby Football League (RFL) and the higher education sector.

The adoption of Women’s Rugby League 9s marks an important step in strengthening the competitive and developmental pathway for female student athletes. With BUCS recognition, students will have a clear, competitive opportunity within the higher education calendar that supports participation, performance and progression in the women and girls game.

This achievement reflects the commitment of the RFL, participating universities, volunteers and everyone involved in delivering university rugby league activity. It is our shared intention that the introduction of Women’s Rugby League 9s will broaden opportunities for students, enhance the competitive offer within universities and contribute to the long-term growth of the sport.

Thomas Brindle, Head of Development at the RFL, said: “Confirmation of the Women's Rugby League 9s event becoming part of the BUCS programme is great news for the sport, and affirmation of the desire for women to play whilst studying at university. We are looking forward to seeing the immediate and wider effect of an increase in playing opportunities for female rugby league players in this setting.”

Neal Kington, BUCS Head of Competitions, added: “We’re delighted that Women’s Rugby League 9s will join the BUCS programme for 2025-26. After three years of collaborative development with the RFL and our member universities, this adoption creates a clear competition pathway and more opportunities for students to play and progress.”
