British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), the Rugby Football Union (RFU), Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR), and the Celtic Challenge are pleased to confirm that, following close collaboration, progress has been made to align the 2026-27 women's performance rugby union calendar across international fixtures, the PWR Cup, PWR League, Celtic Challenge, Women’s BUCS Super Rugby (WBSR), and RFU age-grade international camps.
Through a detailed U23 Review conducted by the RFU and PWR, an opportunity to better align the calendar has been identified to further support player experience and progression. Many U23 players regularly move across multiple environments, balancing club, university and international commitments, and there is an opportunity to enhance alignment across calendars to support their experience. Our aim is to give players, coaches, clubs and universities greater clarity, allowing players to focus on performing, developing and enjoying rugby, rather than managing competing demands on their time.
The work undertaken to align the Women’s Rugby Union calendar will bring forward the Women’s BUCS Super Rugby Milk Championship Final, to be played prior to the U21 Six Nations tournament, meaning U21 internationals playing in WBSR will be able to compete in the pinnacle event of the season. The Final will be held as a standalone Women’s Rugby Union event, combining the Milk Championship Final and WBSR Playoff, scheduled to be hosted at Rodney Parade on 17 March 2027. This also presents an exciting opportunity for a new WBSR competition format that is right for the women’s game, aiming to provide a high-quality experience for all students involved in the WBSR programme.
All organisations have agreed an ongoing process to annually coordinate the calendar collaboratively, ensuring clubs, institutions, staff, and students have the visibility and certainty they need to plan effectively.

The co-designed WBSR competition programme will ensure an exceptional experience for student-athletes by supporting those that are moving between environments throughout the season as well as providing opportunities of a high standard for those looking to make the next step in their journey."
RFU Head of Women’s Performance, Charlie Hayter, said: "This aligned approach is a positive example of what can be achieved when stakeholders across the women’s game work collaboratively with player development at the centre of decision-making. It’s a progressive step that will help maximise opportunities within the pathway, giving players greater access to meaningful, competitive game time across club, university and international environments as they develop."
