What a setting for a spot of rowing on a Sunday morning. Regattabahn Duisburg played host to the three days of rowing at this years games and what a setting it was, 2,000 meters lined with greenery all along int making the broadcasts drone shots looking amazing.
The second A final of the day and over to Josh Knight as he lined up on the start line for the men’s singles sculls.
A strong race from the start saw Josh lead the majority of the race with a strong GB crowd cheering him on.
Leading right up until the final stretch where out of nowhere the man from Moldova took a final burst and just pinched the top spot crossing the line 1.28seconds ahead of the man from the University of Liverpool who walks away with the silver medal.
After the race Josh said “It’s awesome. It’s my first event like this and the scale of it is so cool, so it means a lot to win (a medal). I’m very, very happy with the race.:
“It was hard. I pushed through to the very end and just lost it in the last little bit but it’s awesome to come away with a medal.”
On competing at his second international event, having picked up rowing about two years ago:
“It’s been such a whirlwind over the two years because I’ve managed to progress quickly and get these awesome opportunities, like to be here. It is so special. My dad used to row, he’s the one who initially got me into it. I played hockey for forever, as far as I can remember, and played it at university. Then I wanted a new challenge so I picked up rowing. My height and my physiology have helped me so much and now I’ve fallen in love with the sport. It’s awesome.”
On his goals:
“My goals are of course the Olympics in LA. That’s the main target for the next few years and this is one stepping stone on the way there.
“And to come away with a medal at an event like this, is only going to help that progress. It’s all good practice and (there will be) very exciting things in the future.”
