After a remarkable day of action for Matthew he will be taking home something a little extra in his suitcase in the form of a Rhine-Ruhr 2025 bronze medal.
Matthew’s medal came in the -68kg category of Taekwondo, a fiercely competitive division at the games.
The day started off with back to back 2-0 wins against Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Up next was France in the quarter finals, the first round went in the French athletes favour 10-4 before Matt picked up the pace, winning the next two rounds 11-8 and 10-8 cementing his spot in a guaranteed medal place.
The semi-finals saw Matthew face up against Thailand, a tough contest from the outset which saw him go down 8-2 in the first round before the referee brought the contest to a stop with 0:04 seconds on the clock for an injury above the eye of the GB athlete.
The semi-final loss accounts for GB Students first medal of the 2025 edition of the FISU World University Games Summer taking the countries current medal tally to 296 medals since the games inception in 1959.
Congratulations to Matthew and his coaches on this incredible achievement.
