Five medals for GB Students at World University Cross Country Championships

GB Students won a spectacular five medals at the World University Cross Country Championships held in Muscat, Oman on 17-18 February.

In one of their most successful performances in the 46 years since the Championships began in 1978, GB Students won Women’s Overall Gold, Short Course Mixed Team Relay gold and Men’s Overall bronze. Individually, Alice Goodhall picked up Long-Course silver and Beth Morley won Short Course bronze. 

The GB Students quartet of Tyler Bilyard, Tia Wilson, Alex Melloy and Beth Morley won gold in the Short Course Mixed Relay in a time of 19m 19s, finishing ahead of Spain and South Africa. 

GB Students also secured Women’s Overall Team Gold with outstanding performances across the Women’s Individual Short and Long course events. In the Women’s Individual Short Course, GB Students' Morley earned a bronze medal, backed up by strong performances from Tia Wilson (6th), Elsa Palmer (8th) and Emily Parker (15th). In the Women’s Individual Long Course Individual, Goodhall collected silver behind Maria Karabo Mailula of South Africa. Nancy Scott (6th), Phoebe Barker (9th) and Charlotte Alexander (12th) also put in an excellent showing.

The Men’s Individual Short Course team earned a well deserved team bronze with committed performances from Tyler Bilyard (7th), Rowan Meill-Ingram (8th), Alex Melloy (10th) and Luca Minale (12th). The Men’s Long Course Individual team of Tomar Tarragano, Louis Small, Jeremy Dempsey and Sam Hodgson finshed 15th, 16th, 22nd and 26th respectively.

International Performance Manager, Marc Forrest, said: “We are delighted by the performances of our athletes in Oman, especially given the high standard of competition this year.

Every athlete performed excellently, and in doing so, have acquired more global event experience, that will no doubt aid their future success. We thank the Oman Committee for University Sport for their hospitality and for hosting a fantastic Championships”.
