Get to know the twenty strong athlete delegation selected for the Winter World University Games.

The Winter World University Games (Winter WUGs) is one of the largest university sport events in the world. This year’s Games is the 30th edition of the event, taking place in the picturesque Lucerne in Switzerland between 11 and 21 December, with the curling competition getting underway on 6 December.

The event sees the world’s best student-athletes compete across ten different winter sports including; alpine skiing, biathlon, curling, speed skating, freestyle skiing and snowboarding, ice hockey, figure skating, cross country skiing and ski orienteering.

The GB Students delegation comprises of 20 athletes across; biathlon, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing and snowboarding, and speed skating, with ten of those competing in curling.

Our curlers will be striving for success in Lucerne as Scottish universities dominate the list of selected athletes, with eight out of the ten curlers currently studying or graduated from Scottish universities, including the likes of Dundee University, the University of Stirling and Robert Gordon University. Curling has been our best medal performance in the past, with the Men’s teams achieving Bronze in 2019 and Gold in 2017, and both teams will be hoping for another strong performance to be up amongst the medals again next month.

University of Strathclyde lead the way in athlete representation, with four athletes heading to Lucerne, closely followed by University of Nottingham with three athletes all competing in short track speed skating.

Vince Mayne, BUCS CEO, wishes the best of luck to all athletes: “We are looking forward to following the experiences and achievements of all 20 athletes in Switzerland, and celebrating their success. A huge thank you to all our volunteers and medical staff providing support, helping to give our student athletes a World University Games experience to remember forever.”
