In accordance with REG 4.3 and the BUCS Cycling sport specific regulations, the British Cycling Transgender and Non-Binary Participation Policy shall apply for these Championships. As these Championships are a British Cycling Sanctioned event, the policy for competitive activity shall apply. Detailed information regarding the development of the policy and its implementation can be found here and here respectively.

The following points summarise how this will apply to these Championships, as well as confirming a BUCS specific additional entry restriction:

  • Female category events: To compete in female category events, an individual’s birth sex must be female. Once a Trans male or Non-binary individual (whose birth sex is female) commences hormone treatment, they will not be eligible to participate in any female category events.

  • Open category events: Whatever an individual’s birth sex or gender identity may be, they can compete in Open category events, but the following restriction shall apply for individuals eligible for female category events. An individual eligible for female category events shall not be permitted to enter both the Female and Open categories of the same event. For example, they will not be permitted to enter both the Open and Female Individual pursuit, however they could enter the Female Individual Pursuit and the Open Team Pursuit.

Should the event reach capacity, BUCS may need to restrict the number of entries per institution further. Therefore, when submitting entries on BUCS Play, for all races, riders should be sorted into your ranked order of preference before being submitted.

For Institutions entering multiple riders into a team category, the Institution Administrator should rank all riders in the team with the same number. For example, athletes competing in team number 1 In the Open Team Pursuit should all be ranked '1'. Please note: This year there is a new policy regarding reserves/substitutions for the team events – please see the ‘SUBSTITUTIONS / RESERVES AND WITHDRAWALS’ section for more information.

Entry Process

To apply for the competition all eligible competitors must follow these steps:

  1. Competitor to apply to the event on BUCS Play (Instructions on how to do this can be found here

  1. Institution administrator approves entry (Instructions on how to do this can be found here

  1. BUCS approves/denies entry into competition and publishes confirmed entry list

Substitutions will only be permitted in the Individual Points races and, the Team Pursuit races, and the Team Sprint races. The following shall apply in regard to who shall be an eligible substitute and when substitutions can be made:

Individual Points races: Any individual entered into another event at the Championships who would be eligible base on other event criteria, such as the British Cycling Transgender and Non-Binary Participation Policy.

Team Pursuit and Team Sprint races: Only reserves submitted as part of a team’s entry on BUCS Play shall be eligible to be a substitute for that team. Reserves must be allocated per team upon entry. Reserve riders are to only be allocated to 1 team and cannot ride in another to make up numbers. Reserve riders are not able to be entered in multiple teams nor provide “floating cover”. Five riders may be entered per Team Pursuit team, four riders may be entered per Team Sprint team.

Para Sport

Events with Provision for Para-Cyclists

Female: 200m Sprint, 500m Time Trial and 3000m Individual Pursuit.

Open: 200m Sprint, 1km Time Trial and 4000m Individual Pursuit.

How it Will Work:

Para-Cycling categories at our events will follow IPC Regulations and are open to those who are classified either with locomotive or learning disabilities. There will be separate Female and Open competitions.

All para-cyclists are given a disability classification to allow them to compete. Para-cyclists of all eligible classifications will compete alongside each other and shall be ranked on a multi-classification basis using the UCI factoring system. If there are less than four para-cyclists entered in a category, they shall compete alongside the non-disabled cyclists but results for eligible para-cyclists shall be extracted.
