The opening day of BUCS Nationals 2026 saw four of the six sports get underway across Sheffield.

Day one started at Ponds Forge where it didn’t take long for our superstar athletes to make a splash in the pool.

The records fell think and fast, ending with humongous 17 in total. One of those records was not only a BUCS record, but a Scottish record for Edinburgh’s Archie Goodburn in the 50m Breaststroke in a time of 27.12.

A BUCS Nationals regular, Freya Colbert was dominant in the 200m Freestyle, stopping the clock in a record-breaking time of 01:57.08 for Loughborough.

Over at the English Institute of Sport, it was all about the fastest in the building as the 60m champions were crowned. Loughborough took the spoils in the men’s races; Tom Young won the Ambulant final for an incredible fifth time, Jiajun Yang narrowly won the 60m Hurdles and Jadon Arthur produced a personal best to win the 60m.

In the women’s finals, Ariyanna Grace McGee also set a new personal best to take the 60m Hurdles for Bath and Birmingham’s Jasmine Wilkins powered to victory in the 60m.

Away from the track, the sole field event was won by Loughborough women’s pole vaulter, Hollie Jupp, clearing the bar at 3.83m.

Across the hall, the action on court was non-stop as the first three rounds of the Open and Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles competitions began using a straight knockout format.

At Canon Medical Arena we saw the first fencing golds of the weekend up for grabs. It was double delight for the Green and Gold of Nottingham as Isabella-Andreea Niculai took the Women’s Epee title, while Wilf Broughton won the Mixed Foil competition.

Tomorrow, it’s the return of ‘Super Saturday’ as all six sports take centre stage for the first and only time this weekend.

Action from athletics, swimming and the fencing finals will be live on YouTube.
