From Brian the Lion and Barnabee the Bee, to Lenny the Liverbird and to Gus the Tiger, it’s time for the most competitive race at BUCS Nationals... the Mascot Race!
As a part of the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships, this race continues to be one of the highlights of the event. This years’ event will take place on Sunday 16 February 2026 at English Institute of Sport Sheffield. Please refer to the Indoor Athletics timetable for exact race times.
The 200m track sees institutions’ mascots compete for a fantastic cause, making a donation to the Danny Porter Foundation, a charity that raises funds to help in the fight against cancer in memory of Dan Porter, the late Head of Sport at Sheffield Hallam University.
So, make sure your institution enters its mascot or show your support by making a personal donation.
Here's how it works:
- Each institution can only enter one competitor
- Mascot costumes are compulsory – but running spikes are discouraged
- To enter, make a donation of £30 or more to the Danny Porter Foundation.

About the Danny Porter Foundation
Dan Porter MBE was a champion of university sport and was a big supporter of BUCS Nationals. Sadly, he passed away after a strong battle with numerous cancers.
The Foundation provides donations and grants to other charities to help in research, support, care and equipment to people suffering from cancer and/or requiring neurological surgery. The Foundation will help patients whose friends and family are struggling to provide the support they would like due to their personal circumstances
