The Race Equality Research Implementation Group (RERIG) is a working group formed to address recommendations from research on the experiences of racism and exclusion within BUCS programmes.

RERIG is made up of BUCS staff and member volunteers from across the sector and this summer we are launching the BUCS Anti-Racist Charter, Diagnostic Tool and Toolkit with the aim of driving sector-wide change and supporting the implementation of anti-racist practices.

We want to capture authentic student experiences of university sport, focusing on expectations, lived experience, and a call to action for sector wide change. Voice notes will be compiled, with snippets played at BUCS Conference 2026 (and potentially beyond) to ensure student voices directly inform sector discussions and most importantly, action to continue moving this work forward. The idea is to give voice to the authentic experiences of those sharing with us. This means experiences shared can be good, bad or indifferent. The key is to ensure authentic voice is heard, in order to provide real insights into the lived experiences of those sharing.

How you get involved:

Come along to an online briefing to find out how you can get involved in the campaign. There will be opportunity for your voice to be directly heard by decision-makers across the sector or opportunity to get involved creatively by supporting with social media, graphic design or more generally in the roll out of the broader campaign.

If you’re interested, please come along to an online briefing on Tuesday 28 April at 10:30-11am by clicking on this link or email Molly Byrne, Head of Belonging at BUCS: [email protected]

If you can’t make the briefing get in touch with Molly on 07701223084 or [email protected] and we can send you the recorded briefing or organise a call.

If you would prefer not to attend the briefing but want to share your voice, here’s how you can get involved:

We would like you to record a short voice note answering the questions below (30-45 seconds per question ideally). To ensure anonymity, you are not required to share your name, sport, institution, when you engaged in your studies or what you studied at university.

Snippets of your voice note will be used at BUCS Conference 2026 within a compilation of voice notes in order to give voice to the authentic experiences of students in HE Sport in relation to Race and Equality.

Please share what you would feel comfortable with sharing in a way that represents your authentic voice. Anything you do not feel comfortable with sharing, you do not have to share.

See questions below: You can answer any one of the questions below, or all three:

1. Pre University

"Before coming to university, what did you think sport would be like?"

2. Uni experience

"What actually happened when you tried to take part in sport at university?"

3. The future

"Based on what you have shared, do you think anything needs to be done to improve the sporting experience of students engaging with HE Sport in the future?"

Please send voicenotes or any questions to Ryan Carty, co-Chair of RERIG: 07415440833 or upload audio files to send over email: [email protected] or Molly Byrne, Head of Belonging at BUCS: 07701223084, [email protected].

The deadline for voicenotes is Monday 11 May.
