The BUCS Cycling & Para Cycling Programme kicks off with the Hill Climb Championships at Terrace Hill, one of the 100 official climbs!

PLEASE NOTE - EQUIPMENT

The race is run under the rules and regulations of CTT. This means that the following is REQUIRED to take the start line:

  • Helmet
  • Working Front Light
  • Working Rear Light

 Failure to meet these requirements will be noted as a DNF.

PLEASE NOTE - ENTRY POLICY

Cycling Time Trial have released an updated Transgender Policy to be implemented as of 14 June 2023, which can be found here. As a result of the new policy, the Hill Climb event which is sanctioned by Cycling Time Trials, is required to offer ‘Female’ and ‘Open’ categories in place of the previously used ‘Female’ and ‘Male’ categories. A full paper detailing changes to our programme in line with Cycling Time Trials' policy will be reviewed at National Competitions Group at the end of September.

Registration

Registration will open at 08:30am at Belvoir Castle Long Stay Car Park (NG32 1PE) and will be open through the day.

Students MUST bring their student card to register for the event. This is where you will collect your race number and transponder.

At the conclusion of the event, you must return your transponder after your rider. If you do not return it, it will result in an £85 charge. There will be a marshal at the finish line collecting transponders.

Timetable

The event will begin with the first rider at 10:01 from the start line on Terrace Hill.  Riders will then set off every minute, in accordance with their number. For example, rider 2 will begin at 10:02, rider 74 will begin at 11:14, etc.

Please allow plenty of time to ride from the HQ to the start line (the distance is 5km and will be sign-posted).

08:30 - Registration opens at HQ

10:01 - First Rider sets off

14:32 - Projected final rider sets off, dependent on final entries

15:00 - Presentations at HQ

15:30 - Competitors depart venue

Withdrawls

To withdraw from the event, please contact your Institution Administrator who should inform the Event Lead.

Any withdrawls made after entries close, will be charged the entry fee.

Parking

Belvoir Castle Car Park, NG23 1PA. 

The Car Park will be identified with event signage. 

Parking costs £1.60 per hour, or £6 for the entire day per vehicle. Car sharing is recommended where appropriate.

Changing Facilities

There will be inside toilets which can used for changing located at the car park cafe, and outside portable toilets located at the registration tent.

Food / Drink

There is a cafe on site at the car park, but it is recommended competitors bring food and drink for the entire day.

Presentations

There will be full presentations for each category from 15:00-15:30 at the registration tent.

Please see Appendix 1 for the BUCS Points available at this event. Appendix 1 should be read in conjunction with BUCS Regulation 6.

Sustainability

The sustainability of our event matters to us and these are the positive steps we are taking to manage our environmental impact: 

  • All staff and volunteers are encouraged to travel to the event via public transport 
  • We have used local suppliers where possible 
  • Event programmes are all online, minimising paper use 
  • We will print on demand merchandise (if applicable) 

How can you help at this event? Here’s some ideas:  

  • Be self-sufficient by using refillable bottles and coffee cups to reduce waste 
  • Travel smarter – as a team on a minibus, cycle or use public transport 
  • Go paperless - use your phone for all event information  

Course Details

The Hill Climb championship will take place up Terrace Hill, a 1.1 km hill with a 79m elevation gain.

Once riders have registered at the HQ, they need to cycle their way down to the start line ready for their listed start time (5km). It is the rider's responsibility to ensure they arrive at the start on time.

Riders will be set off every 60 seconds by marshals, starting from 10:01.

Titanium Race Timing will be providing the chip timing for the race.

Local Regulations

It's importnat to note that this race is NOT on closed roads, although we expect minimal/no traffic and this will be marshalled. Please keep to the highway code, before, during and after your race.

Parking on the course by spectators, competitors or helpers of competitors is prohibited. This may lead to disqualification of riders/ teams. There is course side parking near the top of the hill.

Spectating

We highly encourage spectators on the climb to create an exciting and memorable atmosphere. We ask all spectators to please be respectful of all other traffic wishing to drive on the road, and remind all that parking on the road of the race is prohibited. A small car park near the top of the climb can be used, but it is recommended to cycle to the course to spectate.
