Description

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is looking to appoint a Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the 2026-27 season.

The successful applicant will take on the role for one BUCS domestic events season, from appointment (December 2026) through to conclusion of the events (June 2027). Post-holders may be reappointed for an additional season.

The primary responsibility of the Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) will be to manage and maintain the medical equipment, consumables, and inventory required to support BUCS domestic events throughout the season. This will include monitoring stock levels, coordinating the procurement and restocking of medical supplies, maintaining accurate equipment records, preparing event medical kits, and ensuring that all medical assets are event-ready, compliant, and appropriately distributed.

In addition to these responsibilities, the DCMO will support the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the planning, selection, and appointment of medical staff for BUCS domestic events, as well as assisting with the delivery and operational management of medical services.

The role is designed as a developmental and succession-planning opportunity. During the 2026-27 season, the Deputy CMO can work closely alongside the CMO to gain an understanding of the strategic, operational, and administrative responsibilities of the position. Subject to satisfactory performance and mutual agreement, it is anticipated that the Deputy CMO could progress into the CMO role for the 2027-28 season, providing continuity of leadership and support for BUCS medical services.

The two main BUCS domestic events are Nationals and Big Wednesday, which take place annually. It is expected that the DCMO will be available to attend both events to support the coordination of medical services and equipment.

This role would be particularly suited to someone interested in Sport & Exercise Medicine, event medicine, or healthcare operations, and who is looking to develop their experience in medical logistics, inventory management, leadership, and the delivery of medical services within a sporting environment.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Lead the management, organisation, and maintenance of BUCS medical equipment, consumables, and event medical kits, ensuring all items are fit for purpose, appropriately stored, and ready for deployment.

  • Conduct regular stock checks and inventory audits of medical supplies throughout the season, maintaining accurate stock records and identifying replenishment requirements in a timely manner.

  • Coordinate the ordering, procurement, and restocking of medical equipment and consumables in conjunction with the BUCS office, ensuring adequate supplies are available for all domestic events and training activities.

  • Prepare, distribute, collect, and reconcile medical equipment and supplies for BUCS events, ensuring all items are accounted for and replenished following use.

  • Support the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) with the selection, recruitment, and appointment of doctors and other medical personnel for BUCS Domestic events.

  • Assist in the development and review of Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), medical risk assessments, medical operation plans, and other event-specific medical documentation.

  • Support the operational management of medical services at BUCS Nationals, Big Wednesday, and other designated events, helping to ensure safe, effective, and professional medical provision.

  • Act as a point of contact for medical equipment and logistical matters before, during, and after events, liaising with medical staff, venues, suppliers, and the BUCS office as required.

  • Assist the CMO with the leadership and coordination of the medical team, promoting high standards of patient care, professionalism, and event delivery.

  • Contribute to post-event reviews, including equipment audits, stock reconciliation, lessons learned, and recommendations for future improvements to medical services and resource management.

  • Work closely with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Chief Physiotherapist to ensure effective integration of doctor services within the wider medical provision, fostering strong multidisciplinary working relationships and collaborative decision-making.
