England star looking forward to BUCS Futsal Championships 20/11/2009

With new University teams entering the fray this year, George Carney, BUCS Football Development Manager caught up with England futsal star Tom Obasi, a member of the University of Liverpool futsal team.

The BUCS Futsal season kicked off in November with the first of four regional heats held across the country. The BUCS Futsal Championships are the largest adult futsal championships in the UK, having doubled in size this season. With new University teams entering the fray this year, George Carney, BUCS Football Development Manager caught up with England futsal star Tom Obasi, a member of the University of Liverpool futsal team.

Tom Obasi - England FutsalHow did you get into Futsal?
I got into futsal nearly a year and a half ago, I was fortunate enough to be spotted by a member of the FA at a national 5 a side tournament where I scored a hat trick in the final.

What attracted you to the game?
The first time I played futsal I fell in love with the sport! It suited my game perfectly with the emphasis on technical ability, control, skill, accurate passing and clever movement. This is what makes futsal so special as it takes away the aggressive physical nature of football which I feel makes it tough to enjoy.

How was the game different to what you were used to?
If you do a skill you won't get 'snapped' next time you get the ball, there is nearly no heading (no elbows to worry about!) and slide tackling is not allowed (no two-footed challenges to be worried about!).Being indoors the ground always runs even, wind and rain doesn’t come into effect either, so your touch and control can (and should) be perfect.

What has it been like to play for England?
Playing for England has been the best experience I've had in my sporting career. The level of support is brilliant, from the Head Coach to the team doctor and physiotherapist. It is professional and you are coached at the very highest level.

How has playing for England made you a better player?
The things I have taken away from each training session have made me into the player I am today and some of the tricks and skills I have learned from other members of the squad I use in my eleven-a-side game to even greater effect.

What games have you got coming up for England?
I've travelled around the world with England futsal and am excited about our next trip to Libya next month, where I feel we can get a result as we narrowly lost 3-2 to them in a tournament at the start of the year where I scored my first international goal.

How well do you think the University of Liverpool will do in the BUCS Championships?
I'm pretty confident about our chances in the BUCS Futsal Championships. We have some very talented players whose technical ability suits the game perfectly. Being our first year in the championship I think we will come in under the radar and cause some upsets.
