Record entries for this year’s BUCS regatta meant 3 long days of racing at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Just fewer than 900 entries came from 61 Universities to compete in the 46 categories on offer. The biggest events were the beginner coxed fours and eights events – only open to students in their first year of rowing. 70 entries in Men’s beginner coxed fours,  proved the growing number of students within rowing.

For the first time ever, Cambridge sent representatives from this year’s “Blue boat” and “Goldie boat”. A composite crew was entered in the Men’s Championship event. Proving to be the most exciting few races of the weekend, Cambridge took the gold, with Oxford Brookes and Durham following in for Silver and Bronze respectively. Cambridge also picked up a medal in the Women’s event – this time silver, finishing 12 seconds behind Durham’s strong crew. Edinburgh University picked up the bronze and also took Gold in the Women’s Championship Coxed fours, proving they are looking to have another successful season.

Durham took Gold in both the Women’s beginner 4s and 8s and also in the Men’s beginner 4s. A strong contingent was sent from Queens Belfast who took gold in the Men’s beginner 8s.

All crews who reach finals are awarded Victor Ludorum points – with the trophy being presented to the club with the most points at the end of the weekend. The Victor Ludorum was once again won by Durham, but other clubs closed the gap with Newcastle in second, followed by Imperial in third.
