The newly refurbished facility will provide a fitness and wellness experience that brings digital innovation to the gym floor.

Located at Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh campus, Oriam is a stunning, state-of-the-art facility that has been designed with performance sport in mind. The training hub became Scotland’s National Sports Performance Centre back in 2016 and following an increased profile in the performance sport sector, has gone on to provide a home to Scotland’s national football team and rugby squad.

Looking to rebrand the Oriam training experience for both performance and every day athletes, the University has partnered with Technogym as their official supplier of fitness and wellness solutions, working with them to redefine their member journey.

Leading with Innovation Technogym has worked with Heriot-Watt to completely redesign the gym floor with innovative and industry-leading solutions including Group Cycle Connect, a totally immersive indoor cycling experience that enables you to track your workout, monitor your stats and improve your performance. The facility has also invested in the Unity platform which is available on all cardio equipment, giving members access to engaging digital experiences, and even the ability to log into their own personal content, such as Netflix or Instagram, at any time during their workout.

Neil Gibson, Director of Sport Performance and Health at Heriot-Watt University commented, “Our new Technogym equipment will allow us to provide the very best support and environment for our members. We are looking forward to the new semester and being able to help students make exercise part of their university experience through a range of digital experiences that will support adherence to a healthy lifestyle, in which exercise is a key component”.

Creating Immersive Experiences

Looking to bring new energy to the gym floor, Oriam have introduced Skillrow Class, where members get the chance to row together like a real crew, take part in competitions and receive live feedback on their individual performance. In another zone of the gym, Skillbike Class challenges members to friendly competitions with like-minded bike lovers using the industryleading Skillbike, the only indoor bike with real gear shift and real-time biofeedback. “The range of equipment, its flexibility and technological focus were all key components in our decision to make Technogym our preferred supplier” said Lorna Curtis, Director of Operations at Heriot-Watt University.

An Inclusive Fitness Offering

While Oriam is primarily geared towards performance sport, Heriot-Watt has ensured that the gym environment is built around the University’s three key pillars; performance, student and community. There has been a real focus on creating a facility that is accessible to all, with Oriam designing a fitness offering that enables the whole campus to get moving. To keep members engaged and motivated, Oriam will be utilising the Technogym mywellness ecosystem, including the Technogym branded app.

By adopting the Technogym branded app, Oriam will have their own app available for download on the App Store and Google Play. Students will be able to digitally connect with the facility by; following training programmes on their phones, taking part in campus challenges, taking wellness assessments to track their progress, and booking classes with ease. “We’re delighted to be partnering with Heriot-Watt University and to be supplying their students and performance athletes with the latest Technogym products, innovations and services. Heriot-Watt has really embraced the Technogym approach to Wellness by adopting the Total Wellness Solution, and we are really looking forward to working with them closely and celebrating their successes”, says Stephen Barton, Managing Director of Technogym UK.
