It’s time to announce another elite squad heading to Germany — and this time, we’re talking speed, strategy, and serious sharpness. Meet the GB Students Fencing Team for the FISU World University Games 2025 in Rhine-Ruhr! 🇬🇧⚔️
Nine talented fencers from across the UK (and beyond!) are set to represent the nation in foil, epee, and sabre, facing off against the best university fencers from around the world.

Foil
- Alexander Peter Culkin – University College London (UCL)
A consistent performer on the national stage, Alex brings focus and finesse to the foil lineup. - Joe Donaghue – University College London (UCL)
Tactical and tenacious, Joe adds depth to the foil squad with his sharp technique and strong competition mindset. - Dario Gerhard Roberto Stenbeck-Schiavo – Imperial College London
With quick footwork and a calculated style, Dario is one to watch in both individual and team events.
Epee
- James Alexander Jeal – University of Nottingham
Known for his precision and patience, James is a smart tactician and a strong anchor in epee bouts. Alongside his selection at the summer games James has been selected for the senior European and senior world championships. - Julia Caron – ESITC Paris
Representing a UK student studying abroad, Julia brings international flair and epee experience to the team. Alongside James, Julia has also been selected for the senior European and senior world championships. - Louis Alaba Taiwo – University of Nottingham
A skilled and powerful competitor, Louis is ready to leave it all on the piste in Germany. - Harriet Clementine Hillier – University of Manchester
Harriet’s strong results and composed approach make her a key part of the women’s epee team. - Tobias Berry – University of Aberdeen
From BUCS battles to the world stage, Tobias brings strong form and quiet confidence to the squad.
Sabre
- Bethany Elizabeth Brierley – Keele University
Fast, fearless, and fiercely competitive, Bethany is set to take on sabre with style and strength.
Blades Ready 🔥
This is one of the largest and most exciting fencing teams GB Students has ever sent to a FISU Games. With a mix of homegrown BUCS talent and international experience, the team is ready to test their skills on the biggest student fencing stage in the world.
On the upcoming games former GB Students fencer turner team manager Kate Daykin said “I’m really looking forward to the games in a Team Manager capacity.”
“Having attended the World University Games in 2019 as an athlete, I’m excited for this year’s fencers to have such an amazing experience of international multi sport event and being part of Team GB.”
