David Mullarkey makes it two silvers on the track at Rhine-Ruhr 2025, taking second place in the men’s 5,000m final.

Three days on from his Silver medal in the 10,000 meters and David Mullarkey is back at it again claiming sliver in the 5,000m final.

On Wednesday July 23 David went all out in the 10k for silver and then was straight back on the track the next day for his 5km heat, a tough paced race saw him qualify with a time of 14:42.01, third place in his heat setting up the final and a chance at walking away with two medals.

28 athletes lined up on the start line looking for a chance at glory at the Lohrheidestadion arena and from the off David slotted in at the front of the pack helping dictate the pace for the race. With the sun blaring down on the Brit and lap after lap disappearing he quickly approached the bell and the final lap of the race. With just 400m left to run a lot of the pack went out early trying to gain the advantage on their competitors pulling ahead, David held off and didn’t react to this early spur and dropped back to as far as sixth.

Completely unfazed David continued to race his own race and going into the final bend in fifth placed turned the after burners on and went for the overtake on the outside leaving the three athletes in front quickly in his wake. The French claimed the topped spot but an unbelievable final 100m saw David claim his second silver medal of the games with a time of 15:02.39.

An unbelievable achievement for David to claim two medals at a single games a feat not done since 2015 when a cohourt of ahtetes collected a series of indivdual medals.
