Societies Development Coordinator (Special Interest & Academic Societies)

Our Opportunities team are dynamic and passionate about supporting students in their extra curricula activities such as sports and societies and act as a first point of contact for students interested in these areas.

The Students’ Union at UWE has over 100 different Student societies and this position works to support the Academic and Special Interests Student Societies within our Opportunities team and brings interest and depth to this administrative and operational position.

Purpose of the Post:

Working within the Opportunities Department, to be responsible for providing support for the provision, development & monitoring of student involvement in Students’ Union activities, specifically Societies (General Interest & Academic Societies).

  1. To develop and support (operationally and administratively) the Students’ Union at UWE’s Societies
  2. To support elected officers with the remit of Student’s Union Societies.

The position shares with all other staff positions a general purpose to work collectively for the attainment of the goals of the Students’ Union at UWE as expressed in the Constitution, Policy Book, and Strategic Plan and through the decisions of its committees.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Students’ Union VP Societies and Communication in the coordination & development of Students’ Union Societies and their activities.
  • To coordinate and support the provision, development and monitoring of student involvement in The Students’ Union Societies, through effective and efficient administrative support.
  • Supporting Societies to achieve their aims and objectives.
  • To collect and record key information from each Society including accurate membership details and committee details, activity plans, and risk assessments.
  • To assist with the development of student activities and development of Societies through Committee Training and operationally support Society events (including room bookings | external speaker forms budget guidance).
  • Plan, propose, develop and deliver training aimed at supporting all sports and societies. Gather feedback and develop training as required.
  • Engage and support Societies to take part in Student led campaigns and events taking place within the Students’ Union and University.
  • Work with the Opportunities Team to plan and develop online training, resources, communication and consistent support.
  • To maintain an overview of the societies budgets, supporting the Societies in managing their finances, including applying for grants where relevant.
  • To organise the provision, delivery and development of The Students’ Union trip and transport procedures; as well as having an understanding of the finances associated with the fleet, maintenance, repair and assessment.
  • To build working relationships with key stakeholders including University departments, Union staff, and student members and liaise with other agencies to promote and raise the profile of all student activities.
  • Collaborate with other Students’ Union departments, including the Community and Representation departments to develop resources and support for Societies, and to support on Union wide events e.g. Elections.
  • To communicate general Union information to the members of societies
  • Work with the Representation Team, Heads of Departments and other relevant staff to develop, support and promote Academic Societies.
  • To be responsible for the processing and collation of information in relation to External Speakers relating to Society activity, alongside the Opportunities Manager, liaising with relevant University Departments and Staff members where necessary.
