Description

The University of Nottingham is seeking a new Head Coach for its student-led Judo Club!

This coach should have a passion for teaching and supporting the development of Judo skills, from beginners to high-level athletes, while fostering a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Responsibilities: The coach will be responsible for creating and implementing session plans that cater to a range of skill levels, from beginners to national-level athletes. The coach is expected to attend and provide coaching at competitions, including the British University Championships (BUCS), British Championships, and other events that offer valuable learning experiences for our players. It is essential to tailor sessions to individual needs, using competition experiences as learning opportunities to facilitate growth and improvement.

The club currently benefits from several volunteer coaches with knowledge and experience who collaborate with the head coach and committee. This position is initially for one year with the possibility of extension. The role involves conducting 2-3 sessions per week over approximately 33 weeks of the academic year. The coach must be capable of grading players when they are ready and completing the necessary paperwork for submission to the British Judo Association (BJA). Effective communication between the student-led committee and the volunteer coaches is vital for the smooth running of the club. This includes exchanging messages and emails as needed. The committee, elected by club members, is responsible for organizing events and driving positive change, making effective communication crucial.

Key Requirements:

• Minimum Level 3 Qualified Coach with coaching experience.

• Ability to teach judokas of varying skill levels, ages, and experiences.

• Capability to run sessions alongside other coaches, possibly with less experience.

• Familiarity with BJA management and record-keeping.

• Knowledge of injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Background:

The University of Nottingham Judo Club, affiliated with the British Judo Association, has been operational since 2007 and currently has over 50 members.

The club is located at the Dojo in the David Ross Sports Village, which has recently been renovated and includes permanent flooring and a storage area for Judo gis and belts available for beginners and those in the rental scheme.

The club regularly competes in events such as BUCS, with notable successes: the men's team won Gold in 2023 and Silver in 2024 and several individuals have also medalled and qualified for the European Universities Championships, such as our UoN Judo Scholar Amy Platten.

We are hopeful that the right coach can help them achieve greater success.
