Purpose
BUCS is looking to recruit an influential and knowledgeable individual to act as Chair of the League Management Committee (‘LMC’) for Men’s BUCS Super Rugby.
The successful candidate will lead the LMC in the development and discussion of recommendations for future growth and development of BUCS Super Rugby. They will act as a key link with the BUCS Rugby Union Sport Advisory Group (SAG) to direct the development of these recommendations. The candidate will be expected to support the current Chair for the 2024-25 season and assume the Chair role beginning in the 2025-2026 season.
It is expected that the Chair will act as an ambassador for BUCS, the BUCS Men’s Rugby Union programme and establish relationships with all key stakeholders.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Act as an ambassador for BUCS
- Chair League Management Committee (LMC) meetings, beginning in the 2025-26 season
- Prepare for succession to the Chair role in the 2025-2026 season by gaining comprehensive knowledge and experience in the position's responsibilities in the 2024-25 season
- Lead the development of the LMC’s annual development plan
- Arrange for meeting notes and/or minutes to be distributed to LMC members, SAG Chair and BUCS Executive where appropriate
- Encourage transparent and open communication within the LMC
- Establish relationships between BUCS and key stakeholders to the Higher Education (HE) Rugby programme
- Ensure all members of the LMC comply with the BUCS Volunteer Code of Conduct
Person Specification
We are looking for someone who is passionate about developing and promoting HE Men’s Rugby Union in the UK. The Chair must maintain and demonstrate impartiality, preferably with no employment or direct association with an institution currently participating in Men’s BUCS Super Rugby, and ideally not involved with an institution competing at the Premier tier level.
Experience
- Experience in high-performance rugby union
- Experience managing multiple stakeholders
- Long-term strategic planning and direction
- Establishing stakeholder relationships
- Working within voluntary committees
Knowledge and Skills
- Extensive sport-specific knowledge
- Understanding of HE sports landscape
- Knowledge of the working processes of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), Scottish Rugby Union (SRU), and BUCS
- Understanding of developments within the wider landscape of community and professional rugby
- Proven advocacy capability
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to motivate a team
- Ability to think both operationally and strategically
Key relationships
BUCS National Performance Manager, BUCS Rugby Union Programme Coordinator, RFU, WRU, SRU, BUCS Rugby Union SAG Chair, BUCS member institutions, other external partners as appropriate
Time commitment
Four LMC meetings per year lasting 1-2 hours each along with relevant planning and preparation time. The meetings are delivered virtually, so there is no commitment to travel. In addition, there may be other key sport-specific events and meetings which occur throughout the year to which presence would be beneficial, this could be in the range of 3-4 days per year. There is an expectation that other meetings, preparation, and general duties will commit the equivalent of 8-10 days per year.
