Following its postponement in 2021 the Summer FISU World University Games are now confirmed to take place in Chengdu, China between 26th June and 7th July 2022. Nominations are now open for students to be part of the GB Students delegation at this major event.

The Games represent the next biggest multi-sport event after the Olympics and provides the platform for students to compete on the international stage alongside competitors from countries all around the world. The Games are widely recognised as a unique performance environment and as a significant development opportunity for both athletes and support staff.

GB Students have been to all but one edition of this event since its inception in 1937 and we are very keen to continue our participation. We are actively working towards sending a multi-sport delegation despite some financial and logistical challenges that we currently face.

The ongoing and evolving impact of the pandemic, in which China currently employs a zero COVID policy, is likely to impact upon both the costs of participation and aspects of the preparations and games-time experience, with extensive testing and isolation protocols expected to remain in place. We are preparing to meet these strict control measures to ensure the safety of our delegation, whilst also being ready to perform at our best.

Our current projection, based on available international charter travel (amongst other working assumptions) puts the total cost per participant at approximately £6200 per athlete – to be covered by individuals, their institution or their NGB. Where there is NGB support confirmed, this is noted in the individual sport information sections below. If this is not referenced then the cost will sit with the nominating individual and/or their institution, meaning athletes should discuss this with their institutions before submitting a nomination.

We are working hard to bring costs down in conjunction with domestic and international partners and will endeavour to finalise the cost shortly after nominations have closed.

All nominees are asked to check that they meet the selection criteria set by FISU and the sport-specific National Governing Bodies (NGBs) before submitting a nomination.

All eligible athletes must complete and return the athlete nomination by Monday 7 February 2022 (23.59), after which BUCS will review all submissions and coordinate selections with staff from the associated sports.

As part of the nomination, you are also required to submit a ‘Certificate of Academic Eligibility’ form and a ‘BUCS Institution Athlete Nomination’ form and send these to [email protected].
