The programme is unique in equestrianism as all riders must compete on borrowed horses. This removes a barrier to participation as students do not need to own a horse. In addition the riders must compete in both dressage and show jumping with the combined scores making up the final result. As other equestrian events it is a mixed competition.

Over 160 teams take part in the BUCS Equestrian competition with first teams taking part in the Championship and second, third and fourth teams in the Trophy. The mini league winners compete in regional finals and those winners go onto the national finals.

The Equestrian Sports Advisory Group (SAG) provide all the technical and sport specific support for the BUCS Office. Click here to view the membership of the group. The SAG have developed an equestrian strategy. Click here to view the strategy.
