Please note: REG 0 applies to the Term One Opt-in Competition offer for the 2020-21 season, running as a one-off competition in response to the impacts of COVID-19. It DOES NOT apply to those Individual and Team Championships (Events) or Team Championships (Leagues and Knockouts) listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’).
REG 0.1 The Term One Opt-in Competition is separate to the Team Championships (Leagues and Knockouts) taking place in Term Two for each respective sport.
REG 0.2 By participating in the Term One Opt-in Competition, all institutions/Playing Entities are committing to the following:
- That they will have read, understood and shall follow the NGB guidance for each sport in place at the time of each fixture. This shall include sharing this information with the relevant staff, students and any other individuals involved in any fixtures.
- That they will ensure that all their fixtures will take place in accordance with COVID-19 protocols.
- That they will have an individual identified as a COVID-19 Officer for each fixture to monitor that guidelines are being followed.
- That they will have a COVID-19 risk assessment in place for each sport and venue.
- That they have checked their insurance policies to ensure that they cover COVID-19.
- That they will communicate to their teams that their experience at each fixture will vary, in particular in relation to any site-specific COVID-19 protocols in place and that they must follow any such protocols as advised.
- That host institutions/Playing Entities share as much information on site-specific protocols in advance of each fixture.
REG 0.3 Entered teams will be placed into regional groups in each sport broadly aligned to the standard BUCS conferences and tiers. Groups will have more than six teams where possible, to allow increased flexibility and the ability to manage potential local lockdowns, but in some cases smaller groups may be built based on demand in that region.
REG 0.4 All fixtures will be released with a nominal date set before the competition opens. Setting dates and venues for fixtures will be at the discretion of Institution Administrators (IAs), following the standard Fixture Change Request process on BUCS Play. The window for fixtures begins on Monday 5 October and the last date fixtures may be played on is Wednesday 16 December.
REG 0.5 The Term One Opt-in Competition is intended to be a flexible offer and as such there shall be no penalties if fixtures do not take place due to current restrictions and/or concerns around competing. Any fixtures not played will go down as void – there shall be no walkovers. How many matches a team plays (up to twice against each team in their group) will be at the discretion of the institution. We will have the programme open for eight weeks and fixtures can be played on any day during those weeks.
REG 0.6 Should an institution/Playing Entity wish to withdraw a team they may do so at any stage with no penalty by e-mailing [email protected] with this request, as well as contacting all other teams in their group to inform them of this withdrawal.
REG 0.7 Each sport will be subject to any UK government, devolved administration or local authority rules, regulations and guidance in relation to COVID-19 in place at the time. Such rules, regulations and guidance may change during the competition. These shall supersede any BUCS General or Sport Specific Regulations.
REG 0.8 Each sport will be subject to any National Governing Body rules, regulations and guidance in relation to COVID-19 in place at the time. Such rules, regulations and guidance may change during the competition. These shall supersede any BUCS General or Sport Specific Regulations.
REG 0.9 The “Laws of the Game” or equivalent to be followed for each sport, shall be those of the International or National Governing Body identified in the relevant BUCS Sport Specific Regulations. However, these shall be superseded by any rules, regulations and guidance in relation to COVID-19 in place at the time as per REG 0.8 and REG 0.9. BUCS’ Sport Specific Regulations will not be enforced; however, the BUCS Executive strongly recommends that institutions/Playing Entities use these to agree expectations for each fixture.
REG 0.9.1 If a sport cannot be played in the standard BUCS format, but can be played in an alternative format then institutions/Playing Entities can agree to play fixtures as such. For example with American Football, if current UK government, devolved administration or local authority and BAFA (British American Football Association) rules, regulations and guidance do not permit contact 11 v 11 football matches to take place, but do permit Flag Football matches to take place, then institutions/Playing Entities can agree to fulfil fixtures playing this format and following the respective rules of the game of BAFA.
REG 0.10 Team Sheets To support track and trace processes, teams are strongly encouraged to use the team sheet function on BUCS Play for each of their fixtures. In order to be selected on a team sheet, all individuals must be registered on BUCS Play as a participant in the relevant community and have joined the relevant team. BUCS recommends placing onto the team sheet every individual who is travelling to/attending the fixture with, or as part of, the team. As such, the maximum number of people allowed on each team sheet on BUCS Play has been set at 100. Once all individuals have been listed on the team sheet, the opposition should be requested to “approve” the team sheet so that the details are locked in.
REG 0.11 For clarity, REG 1–-REG 5 shall apply to the Term One Opt-in Competition and will be enforced.
REG 0.12 The competition’s focus is on the fun of returning to sport, with no rewards aligned to performance in the competition. As such, REG 6 will not apply, with no BUCS Points, medals or trophies being awarded.

REG 0.14 REG 8–REG 15 will not be enforced; however, these regulations may be of use for institutions/Playing Entities to agree expectations for each fixture.
REG 0.15 Appendices 1–10 and 12–14 will not apply; however, elements of these may be of use for institutions/Playing Entities to agree expectations for each fixture.
REG 0.16 For clarity, Appendix 11 shall apply to the Term One Opt-in Competition and will be enforced.
REG 0.17 For clarity, teams cannot ‘Play Under Protest’, claim a walkover, or submit an appeal against a match result.
