CIMSPA Professional Development Opportunities

In line with the objectives of the Professional & Workforce Development (PWD) strand of the BUCS Strategy, the PWD Steering Group has been working with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) to enable professional development opportunities for member institutions.

We are pleased to announce that BUCS is a full Employer Partner of CIMSPA. This provides BUCS members with the opportunity to access discounted CIMSPA membership and a wide range of accompanying benefits.

As an Employer Partner, BUCS, the PWD Steering Group, and the wider membership will now be able to contribute to the development of the Professional Standards Matrix. This in time will allow us as a sector to influence and increase the relevance of existing and future CPD pathways and opportunities for a variety of staff roles.

The CIMSPA Professional Standards Matrix will provide professionals within the sport and physical activity sector with clear guidance on the following:

- The knowledge and skills required to assume a specific job role / occupation.
- The professional standards required to support career progression.
- Identified accredited and endorsed learning and development opportunities.

With BUCS becoming an Employer Partner of CIMSPA, there is now the opportunity for staff members and students within BUCS member institutions to benefit from a 30% discounted CIMSPA membership. This will provide access to a wide range of development and learning opportunities for individuals, including access to the online CIMSPA academy – over 1300 online training and CPD resources.

BUCS and the PWD Steering Group will endeavour to produce in conjunction with CIMSPA a professional development pathway specific to the HE environment once all of the relevant professional standards are completed.

Initially BUCS and the PWD Steering Group is encouraging staff members in the HE sector that work in leisure operations or exercise and fitness focussed roles to access discounted CIMSPA membership.

Roles within this field including the relevant CIMSPA membership category, whilst not exhaustive, may include:

Job Role CIMSPA Membership Category
Operations Manager Member
Health and Fitness Manager Member
Gym Instructor Affiliate (Exercise and Fitness)
Personal Trainer Practitioner (Exercise and Fitness)
Duty Manager Member
Head of Department Chartered Member*
Team Leader Associate (Leisure Operations)
Receptionist Affiliate (Leisure Operations)
Sports Assistants / Lifeguards Affiliate (Leisure Operations)

*For chartered member status, individuals will enter at ‘Member’ level and will be guided through the chartered assessment process. Upon successful completion of the chartered assessment, full Chartered Member status will be awarded.

Note: CIMSPA Membership for other management, development, participation, performance, coaching, delivery and practitioner roles within the HE sports sector will be promoted as the range of professional standards that are relevant to these areas are developed. BUCS will, as required, co-opt members with the relevant expertise to contribute to the development of professional standards on behalf of the HE sector.

In order for staff members to access CIMSPA membership at the discounted rate, the university will need to become an Employer partner of CIMSPA – this is free. Additionally, all Employer Partners are able to contribute towards the development of professional standards. More information on this is available here.

Samantha Bell-Minogue, Assistant Director of Sport at the University of Nottingham, and Chair of the BUCS PWD Steering Group commented on the partnership:

"At a time when the Sport and Physical Activity sector is being professionalised, it seems only sensible to be part of the journey and ensure that the HE sector both influences and helps develop this area of work. The end goal is to ensure that all of our staff are able to benefit individually as professionals and that HEI’s can encourage and support this when recruiting, deploying and developing staff, guided by a professional and recognised structure to do so."
