Rugby Union - Get Involved

Get Involved

In response to demand from universities for an additional tier of rugby competition below the BUCS leagues, BUCS is working in partnership with the RFU to provide additional resource and support in the establishment of new RFU Development Leagues.

These local and regional leagues, for universities looking to engage additional players in rugby union, will incorporate the following:

• Provide a more flexible, tailored competitive game with reduced regulations and requirements as required.

• Adapted formats for the number of teams entered, ensuring regular playing opportunities and a reduction in cancelled fixtures from ‘no shows’.

• Emphasis on new and existing players of all abilities getting the opportunity to play all forms of the game.

• Qualified referees, allowing universities, clubs and teams to be self-sufficient, and ensure cancellations can be reduced.

• No away games being more than an hour away from the university.

• Flexible kick off times, tailored to the players, also allowing for the academic timetable.

• Managed by the regional RFU University Rugby Development Officer to provide support and guidance to participating universities and clubs.

University Rugby Development Leagues

The RFU development leagues are being managed on a regional basis by the respective University Rugby Development Officer (URDO). For more information on how your university can provide additional playing opportunities to students through rugby development leagues please contact the respective URDO by viewing the contact details document found here.

For more information on developing rugby union at your university or for universities outside of England who would like to discuss alternative opportunities please contact Peter Macaulay, RFU Universities Development Manager or Matt Holdstock, BUCS Development Manager.
