Get Involved

In partnership with BUCS, British Judo continues to increase the opportunities available to students at universities across the HE sector. As well as the on-going development of the BUCS Judo Championships there are now specific student events that sit outside of the BUCS competitive programme hosted in Warwick, Sheffield and London.

British Judo has developed a number of initiatives and programmes for students to get involved in the sport:

Student Voucher Scheme
British Judo has a well established Student Voucher Scheme, aimed at bringing new student participants into the sport through their university judo club. The scheme is also designed to support the development of new student judo clubs within institutions.
The scheme enables students to develop fitness levels, balance, coordination, flexibility and relevant skillsets in a no-pressure environment and provides the opportunity to start a new sport or return to Judo at a reasonable price.
The benefits to the university are a heavily discounted offer for students, support of British Judo staff and a long term sustainable plan to establish and sustain judo at the university, or to invest in the existing club and improve that further. As part of the scheme, the student gets their BJA membership, their judogi (suit) and their first grading to red belt.

British Judo - Student Club Handbook
No club at your University? No problem. If you are interested in setting up a Club then British Judo has developed a Judo Student Club Handbook which will give you guidance, advice and support on how to do this.

The handbook contains information on the following areas:

- Club Development
- Membership
- Marketing and Recruitment
- Competitions and Gradings
- Coaching and Training sessions
- plus lots of wider considerations around the logistics, development and management of a student judo club.

Discover Your Gold

UK Sport and EIS have also launched a multi-sport talent ID programme called #DiscoverYourGold.

Judo forms part of 2 strands of this programme;

- #DiscoverYourFight

- #DiscoverYourPara-Potential

As part of this there is an opportunity for all students to try Judo, notably those who have stopped doing their chosen sport, are considering changing their sporting focus, might be interested in trying something new or re-discovering a sport they used to do.

The programme in regards to Judo mainly focusses upon heavyweights (men and women), lightweight women and Visually Impaired judoka.

Any students that are interested in the programme can find further information by visiting:
