English Universities football squad selected for British University Games 2008 31/03/2008

English Universities Head Coach, James Ellis has announced his squad who will play their Welsh & Scottish counterparts at the British University Games.

English Universities Head Coach, James Ellis has announced his squad who will play their Welsh & Scottish counterparts at the British University Games. Ellis said “Myself and Steve Sharman had some difficult decisions narrowing down the squad from 28 to 18 but we feel we have picked a squad with enough experience and flexibility to allow us to be very competitive in this years tournament”. The squad (See below) has been announced on the back of the first fixture of the year where the Team defeated the RAF 4-2 in February.

The Games are an opportunity for the players to be away together over 4 days and feel what it is like to be involved in a professional tournament environment. Team Manager Steve Sharman said “This competition is really important to our programme and is another development step for these players. They are all playing in the grind of Non League football and this will give them a chance to be treated like a professional athlete in a tournament set up. The programme we have put together has the athlete as the focus whilst building that important squad bond. The players will be treated like all the National Team squads in Team England from ensuring they are living correctly, have the medical support and giving them every opportunity to perform at the highest level with match analysis and recovery strategies.”

Dawn Scott, Exercise Scientist at the FA who is working with the team at the Games said “These players will have had a hectic schedule as far as competing for their University and their Non League Club over the past 8 months, which is why it is important that I focus on the players’ physical preparation and recovery. The players will benefit hugely from this tournament which can only help them develop as a player”.

The England squad is captained by UWE Hartpury student and Gloucester City central midfielder Marc Richards. Marc who competed in the last Games said “The English Universities programme this year has been great to be involved in, it is giving us a real chance to develop as individuals and a group of players. I am really looking forward to playing in this year’s tournament and I feel that the programme we have over the 4 days is going to make us really feel part of a National Team programme.”

Ellis added “The preparation for this trip is really important and the group of staff that are going will make a huge difference to giving our players every chance to perform over the 4 days. My assistant coaches Tom Curtis (Head Coach at Loughborough University) and Graham Potter (Head Coach at Hull University) will give the players a really experienced and dedicated staff.”
Final preparations for the squad will take place at Loughborough University on 2 April where the players will meet up and go through testing and final game related practices to ensure that when the squad commence their journey up to Scotland on the 7th April that they will have every opportunity to deliver at the highest level.
