Durham takes top spot at the BUCS PricewaterhouseCoopers Regatta 10/05/2010

For the seventh year in a row, Durham University rowers reigned supreme at the BUCS PricewaterhouseCoopers Regatta in Nottingham over May Bank Holiday weekend. The Durham team amassed enough points on the final day of competition to maintain their lead over Imperial College and take home the Victor Ludorum (VL) trophy.
With almost 1000 crew entries, the three-day regatta is now the largest in Europe and the performances matched expectations. Each morning, students competed in time trials for 12 of the events to qualify for heats, with finals often not finishing till 7.30pm.

Queen’s University, Belfast won many of the coveted finals including the Men’s Championship 8s (with Oxford Brookes in second and Durham in third), the Men’s Intermediate 8s, the Men’s Intermediate 4s and the Men’s Championship Quads. They also had strong performances from their women’s teams to take first place in the Beginner 8s and 4s.

19 universities won gold medals and over 40 universities had crews in the finals. Many beginner crews including Kent, Lancaster, St Andrews, Salford and Heriot Watt came to the PricewaterhouseCoopers Regatta with great support which helped the teams put in some fantastic performances.

BUCS would like to thank the officials and volunteers who staffed the event in extremely bad weather conditions to make sure the event ran smoothly and on time over the weekend.
