BUCS Surf Championships return to Fistral Beach 09/10/2017

Each year the best student-surfers in the UK descend on Cornwall’s Fistral Beach to compete at the largest surf competition in Europe, and this year is no different.

Hoping to leave with a BUCS medal and BUCS points for their institution, 333 students – 239 male and 94 female – will slip into wetsuits and compete across the three-day event in one of England’s most idyllic locations.

The surf gods shone on last year’s event, delivering challenging waves throughout the competition which ensured a highly competitive event. FXU Students made the short distance back to Falmouth with the Overall Male Team silverware, while Cardiff University won the Overall Female Team trophy.  Flora Lawton, of the University of Bristol, won the overall female trophy and FXU’s Joseph Prow won the male event.

Last year’s men’s silver medallist and 2015 champion, FXU’s Matt Chapman will be in attendance to avenge last year’s second placing. Similarly, Flora Lawton will be travelling down from Bristol hoping to retain her BUCS surfing crown.

With it being one of the first large events in the BUCS season, the BUCS Surf Championships always attracts a diverse range of students – from freshers to fifth-year students. Alongside the competition there’s always a strong social element to the event, and this year is no different as partners Outgoing have social events across Friday and Saturday evening featuring DJ’s Secondcity and Kissy Sell Out! Tickets for Outgoing's social events are selling fast, so if you're heading down to Newquay, ensure you purchase your tickets in advance.

Additional BUCS partners for the event include Love Cove Festival who will be pumping out tunes on the beach throughout the weekend, as well as Star Surf Camps who will be in attendance running beach games for all to participate in.

For those attending the event, all pre-event information, including confirmed entries and heat sheets, can be found on the BUCS website.

The 2017 BUCS Surf Championships will take place from 13-15 October on Fistral Beach, Newquay. Follow the action live across social media using the official event hashtag: #BUCSsurf.
