University of Nottingham awarded 2018 BUCS Big Wednesday 11/07/2017

BUCS is delighted to announce that the host of BUCS Big Wednesday 2018 will be the University of Nottingham.

This prestigious event is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar and marks the culmination of the BUCS season for league sports, which runs from October through to March. BUCS Big Wednesday features a massive 52 finals in 14 sports, all played concurrently on the one or two days, at the host university in March of each year.

Each week, the 170+ member institutions of BUCS enter teams into 26 sports across 930 leagues. This totals over 5,000 teams and some 80,000 students competing every week in BUCS competitions, all aiming for a shot at glory at BUCS Big Wednesday.

Established as one of the country’s leading institutions for sport, the University of Nottingham offers world-class facilities to deliver an outstanding sporting experience for all. This is an extremely exciting time for University of Nottingham Sport, having invested over £50m in new sports facilities over three years, culminating in the construction of the £40m David Ross Sports Village which opened in Autumn 2016. As a consequence, the University now has one of the best portfolios of university sporting facilities in Europe, with huge potential to grow the sports programmes even further in the forthcoming years.

The University has a rich sporting heritage, as one of the nine founders of the Inter Varsity Programme in 1919, and is currently ranked as the fourth most successful university for sport since the inception of the leagues. In 2016/17, the university finished fourth in the BUCS league tables, and at the 2017 BUCS Big Wednesday in Bath competed in an impressive 14 finals.

University of Nottingham’s Director of Sport Dan Tilley said:

“It is an honour to be hosting BUCS Big Wednesday in 2018 and we are incredibly excited to welcome BUCS and all the competitors here to Nottingham.”

“We are very proud of the world-class facilities here at the university and hope to offer a truly inspiring venue to the UK’s best student athletes.”

BUCS Head of Sport - Mark Brian added;

‘We are delighted to be going to Nottingham for BUCS Big Wednesday in 2018. Their world class facilities will ensure the event continues to display the highest quality university sport. The proximity of venues being used will also create a great atmosphere around the event to maximise both player and spectator experience.

We look forward to working with the University of Nottingham to deliver what will be a fantastic event.’
