International full back, Elli, eyes gold at BUCS Rugby Sevens Championship 01/04/2016

Cardiff Metropolitan University women’s rugby full back, Elli Norkett, hopes to continue her current form – and make it two BUCS gold medals in two months – at the BUCS Rugby Sevens Championship tournament, 27 April.

Elli played a vital role in her sides BUCS Rugby Union Championship win, scoring half of Cardiff Metropolitan’s total points tally as they brushed aside Northumbria University at the home of English rugby, Twickenham – winning 20-5.

“On the day of the BUCS Rugby Union final I was nervous but excited about the opportunity to play at Twickenham.

“After the final whistle went my emotions were unexplainable, I felt proud of the team’s performance and the feeling of all the hard work throughout the year paying off. I am confident in our squad’s ability to do well in the Sevens Championship [tournament] where we will be hoping to win that also,” says Elli.

Elli, who featured in both Wales’ Six Nations and World Cup squad in 2014, has her eyes set on competing as part of team GB at this summer’s FISU World University Rugby Sevens Championships. The World University Rugby Sevens Championships will see the best university Rugby Sevens teams from around the world compete for gold, silver and bronze at Swansea University, 7-9 July.

“My biggest motivation for working hard in sport is to get back to international standard again. I wish to get into the GB students sevens squad playing in Swansea this year, then progress back in to the Welsh women's rugby squad ahead of the Six Nations and the World Cup, then hopefully gain a place for the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018,” says Elli.

Elli NorkettStudying Sport Development in the Welsh capital, she has already reaped the benefits of university sport – competing twice on Twickenham’s hallowed turf, acquiring a BUCS title in the process.

“I find playing week in week out in a great team environment the most enjoyable part of university sport. University sport has transformed me into a much more confident and experienced player and has prepared me to be able to compete at a higher standard,” comments Elli.

The Rugby Sevens Championship tournament will take place at West Park Leeds Rugby Union Club, Leeds, 27 April, where Elli and Cardiff Metropolitan will join seven other female teams and 16 male teams. One week prior – 20 April – the same location will play host to the Rugby Sevens Trophy tournament, featuring 11 female teams and 22 male teams.
