University in Focus: Team Southampton 16/02/2016

Team Southampton is the brand that represents all students at the University of Southampton who take part in sporting activities: from the recreational gym user, through to the elite performer.  The brand launched two years ago with the introduction of the new logo and unified kit for all teams.

Within Team Southampton there are 98 Sports Clubs, both competitive and recreational, covering a huge variety of sports from Scuba Diving to Korfball.

This year, a new committee was set up within the Sports Zone which concentrates on increasing participation in sport, especially in underrepresented groups.  The Sports Participation Committee is launching the Rainbow Laces Campaign within Team Southampton and at the University, with the aim of all players in our Varsity competition wearing the laces.

There are many successful clubs that are part of Team Southampton:  our Rifle Club has finished with more BUCS points than any other University for the last 4 years, and are looking to continue this run and our Taekwondo Club are going for a 7th consecutive win at the Student National Taekwondo Championships taking place later this year. The Quidditch Club at Southampton is the current national champions and last year finished 3rd in the European Championships.

Since 2009, Team Southampton competes against the University of Portsmouth in our Varsity competition.  This year, Southampton is hosting and we are looking to increase the number of both spectator and competitors this year.  Between the Universities we have over 2500 participants over 63 fixtures on one day.
