The Intramural Programme: Social Sport at Southampton 16/02/2016

University of Southampton is proud to have over 1500 participants across 7 sports in its Intramural Programme throughout the year.  The featured sports are football, futsal, basketball, badminton, netball, hockey and rugby, with matches taking place at weekends or Wednesday afternoons.

The number of teams and participants has increased over the last two years since the Students’ Union took over the organisation of the programme from the University.  We have reduced the entry cost by 60% and we are currently working with Sport and Wellbeing to look at ways to reduce the cost further to drive participation in sport at the University of Southampton.

The Intramural Committee also organise a summer tournament each year with all the profit being donated to charity.  Last year saw over 1000 competitors taking part over the one day.  It is also a chance to help smaller sports, such as Touch Rugby and Ultimate Frisbee, to raise their profile at the University and help them to get more members for the following year.  It is also a great way for people to relax and have a day off before the exam season starts in earnest.

Intramural teams from badminton, football and netball also participate in the highly anticipated Varsity competition against the University of Portsmouth, this year on the 13th March.

The year culminates in a large award ceremony, unique to Intramural sport. This evening is a prime opportunity to celebrate the achievements of athletes and volunteers involved in Intramural, separately to our Athletic Union.
