BUCs in Focus Rec Sport: Small Sided Hockey 10/02/2016

The Small Sided Hockey project, funded by Sport England and delivered in partnership with England Hockey, is set to run pilot schemes in institutions across the country throughout the coming academic year before launching a full product for the 2016/17 season. The project seeks to develop the 5 and 6-a-side version of the game with offers ranging from Intra-Mural leagues and social sessions through to high-level BUCS competitions – emphasising the fast-paced, attacking nature of the sport throughout.

Greg Sturge, Small Sided Hockey Manager at BUCs: “It is great to see Royal Holloway engaging in the development of Small Sided Hockey as they look to provide recreational and social sporting opportunities to their students. With enthusiastic students and staff at the helm, music playing at every event and a fun, competitive atmosphere being created, I’m convinced that the project will go from strength to strength. I am looking forwards to working with them in the coming months to ensure the project becomes a success and engages as many students as possible!”

Rhys Plummer, Hockey Activator; ‘It’s good because it allows you to play in a mixed-sex environment and build on skills you gain from playing normal 11-a-side hockey. Personally, I enjoy the sessions as I find watching and helping people try new sports and activities very rewarding.’

Kirsty Mackay, GB Hockey Player; “I think University sport and social sport is so important. It’s inclusive to all, you can jump in and out and it’s flexible around your studies. It’s a great way to get started and engage with it.”

Small Sided Hockey is all about fun, fast-paced, social sport. No matter ability or knowledge of the game, it’s a great way to get involved in sport. Staying as true to rules of the 11-a-side game, this format is about teams of 5 players in a third of a pitch having the opportunity to score as many goals as possible. Under the floodlights of the astro on a Saturday night, expect good music, good fun and a chance to show-off those skills.
