Supporting talent and excellence 09/12/2015

Sport Brighton has a new addition to their staffing team with a new Performance Sport and Fitness intern position for 2015/16.

Colin Brand who recently obtained a Sports Science undergraduate degree at the University of Brighton is now undertaking post graduate studies alongside this full time intern position. Colin is helping to provide support for an ever expanding performance sports service which includes the university’s scholarship scheme as well as student club performance development. Upon taking the position Colin said ‘Having the opportunity to provide support and help develop the student athlete’s within an ever expanding performance sports service is an extremely exciting position to be in.’

The university recently revamped its student club programme to provide clubs with a choice as to the level and type of support they wanted. Clubs now have the opportunity to apply for the Sports Federation Gold programme. Student on the Sports Federation Gold programme gain access to strength and conditioning sessions, sport specific coaching, facility and gym access as well as workshops on areas such as nutrition and injury prevention. This year both men’s and women’s football 1st teams are on the programme along with a number of individuals in other sports. Students on the programme all go through an induction which include performance testing and physiotherapy assessments.

As well as student club development Colin also provides strength and conditioning support to the University of Brighton Scholarship athletes.  The University’s scholarship programme has over 30 student athletes with support ranging from financial packages to facility and mentor allocation to enable students to balance study and competition. Scholars this year include GB squad members in Rifle Shooting, Kayaking and Athletics. In choosing a student to profile on BUCS Wednesday we chose Robert Wagner who has won BUCS placings and overall titles in the BUCS Snowsports competitions over several years.
