BUCS Division: Premier North

What university team are you competing against?: Durham 1st

How have your team done so far in BUCS? Considering this is our first season in the Premier North, our men's 1st have done extremely well in the league. With 5 wins from 8 matches, we sit 3rd in the table and will comfortably stay in the league this season. We have not yet started the National Cup but hope with our strong team, we can have a good run in the competition.

Why is Fencing so great? Fencing is so great because it's a sport based on sword fighting which we have all done in our lives in some way or another whether it be with sticks in a park or rulers at school. The need for precision, mental ability, concentration and physical fitness make fencing an all-round amazing sport.

What are your aspirations for the rest of this BUCS season? We hope to finish out the season with a strong performance and push for the title. The Cup will be our main focus once the league is finished where we hope to do as well as we did last year and reach the final and perhaps go one better and walk away with the cup.

Who is your sporting idol and why? Our Sporting Idol is Richard Kruse. Most people have not heard of him but he was the first British fencer to really make a mark internationally for Great Britain. He has competed at the highest level for over 10 years, been to two Olympic games, won many international competitions and if it wasn't for him, fencing in this country would not be where it is today.

Best achievement: Our best achievement has to be getting promoted into the Premier North. It was a first for our mens team and required true dedication from every member all year round and some amazing performances throughout the year really made it a season to remember. This is why it is our best achievement to date.
