Swansea Men's Football 1's Player Profiles 21/10/2015

Ahead of Swansea University's tier 1A enounter with Cardiff, we meet the team hoping to prevail in the welsh derby!

 

Name: Dafydd Evans
Position: Head Coach

Dafydd has only recently joined SUMFC and the 1st team however he has already started to instil some of his footballing styles into the 1s game. A successful ‘All American’ Coach, Dafydd has brought a breath of fresh air to the squad this game vs. Cardiff will be a good test for the new Gaffer as he hopes to bring more success to the club and to the university.

A question to Dafydd about the game on Wednesday.

Q: As you know the rivalry between to Swansea and Cardiff is huge and neither team would like to concede bragging rights to the other, in saying this how are you feeling ahead of your first game in charge of the biggest game in Welsh Uni Football?

Dafydd: “I suppose any Swansea vs Cardiff event is an attractive fixture. I’m looking forward to it. I’m especially looking forward to learning more about the players and seeing how they handle, react and rise to the occasion.”

Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 21
Club: Goytre United
Year of Study: 4th Year
Studies: MSc Sports Science

Luke has been the 1st team keeper for the past 3 years with one more year left due to starting his masters, Luke will be looking to finish his University career on a high.

Name: Frank Tobin
Position: Full Back
Age: 20
Club: Garden Village AFC
Year of Study: 3rd Year
Course: BSc Business Management

Frank is currently in his final year of study and has held the first team right back position for the past 2 seasons. 2 varsity appearances under his belt 

Name: Joe Palmer
Position: Full Back
Age: 20
Club: Team Swansea
Year of Study: 2nd Year 
Course: BEng Civil Engineering

Joe or Palmer as he is more affectionately known as in the club, started out in the 2’s but proved himself as a worthy player for 1’s last season. In his 2nd year as Club Captain, Joe brought stability to the club last year and is now looking forward to taking the club forward alongside new head coach, Dafydd Evans.

Name: Greg King
Position: Centre Back
Age: 21
Club: Team Swansea
Year of Study: 3rd Year
Course: BSc Economics

Greg started off like many of this team in the 2nd team now deservedly in the 1st team the lad from Bournemouth has more than proved his potential. Good in the air and strong in the tackle he could be a very important player for the 1’s push for success this year. Also in his 2nd year as Club Captain, Greg and Joe have now their sights on bringing the club in line with other successful university football clubs.

“Coming into my third year at Swansea Uni, the rivalry between Swansea and Cardiff feels greater than ever. During my first year at Uni I was lucky enough to be involved in 2 wins over Cardiff 1s in the league, including a game in which I scored. To this day I still would say that goal and win would be the highlight of my BUCS career, as games against Cardiff are always huge. 

Looking to the game on Wednesday, I'm very confident that we will be able to come away with the win. The squad is looking stronger than ever and with the new manager now in place, everyone will feel settled and hopefully we will get that all important win!”

Name: Pete Hyndman 
Position: Centre Back
Age: 22
Club: Team Swansea
Year of Study: 2nd Course: BEng Chemical Engineering

Pete has made the step up to the 1st team this year after captaining the 2nd team last season. He has also made a positional change from centre midfield to centre half, a position that he relished in for Team Swansea and he is now looking to cement himself into the position for the 1sts. Pete has also gained himself a position on the committee as the clubs media officer. 

Name: Tom Bauza
Position: Defender/Midfield
Age: 20
Club: Llanelli
Year of Study: 2nd 
Course: BSc Genetics

Younger brother to ex swan Guillem, Tom has performed well for both the 1’s and 2’s since his move from Spain. A tidy and highly technical player, Tom can play equally well at the back or holding in midfield. A good player to have this year.

Name: Tom Grey
Position: Defensive Midfielder/Centre Half
Age: 21
Club: Garden Village AFC
Year of Study: 3rd
Course: BSc Business Management

Tom has spent his last 2 years in the 1st team although last year was mostly spent on the injury table. This year however he’s back with a point to prove that Swansea aren’t the underachievers of the league. Tom has recently been named 1st team captain for the year and will be looking forward to leading the squad in the league and into varsity. 

Name: Nick Hyden
Position: Midfielder
Age: 19
Club: Team Swansea
Year of Study: 2nd
Course: BSc Economics 

Nick is into his second year of university and has taken on the role of social secretary at the club. Nick slotted into the centre of midfield last year and from his first game at the club looked extremely comfortable. He will be hoping to keep progressing himself this year and help the side push towards that all important promotion to the Southern Premier league.

Name: Jordan Smith
Position: Midfielder
Age: 22
Club: Team Swansea
Year of Study: 3rd
Course: BSc Sports Science

Jordan is a local Swansea lad who came through the Swansea city FC youth system before gaining himself a pro contract, has become a huge part of the University’s 1st XI over the past 2 seasons and now into his third year will be hoping to 

Name: Declan Sheppard
Position: Midfielder
Age: 20
Club: Team Swansea
Year of Study: 3rd 
Course: BSc Business Management

Dec started off his career with Oxford City before coming to university, easily the most technically gifted player in the squad. His ability to play with both feet can destroy teams at times, Dec will looking forward to adding his attacking flair at every opportunity this year.

Name: Freddie Lewenden
Position: Midfielder
Age: 20
Club: Unassigned
Year of Study: 1st 
Course: BA Law

Freddie has come into the 1’s and has shown early glimpses of potential at training and during the first game of the season. Calm in possession and always looking to play it simple, Freddie could go far in the 1’s set up. It’s always hard for freshers to come in but he has started off really well.

Name: Farai Hwenga
Position: Winger
Age: 20
Club: Unassigned
Year of Study: 2nd 
Course: BSc Accounting and Finance 

SUMFC’s journeyman, Farai started off his uni career with the 6th team, 12 goals later he was moved to the 2’s where he quickly proved he could play higher. A strong, quick forward who can turn defenders inside out. Farai will be looking to kick on and bring more success to himself and the 1’s.

Position: Winger
Age: 22
Club: Haverfordwest County
Year of Study: 5th
Course: Post-Graduate Medicine

The former Team Swansea talisman has now moved on to Welsh Prem side Haverfordwest County, with this being said he is still chomping at the bit to win something with the 1st team. With destructive pace and clinical finishing, John and his strike partner Adam Orme could very well push the 1s towards success with their goals. Don’t expect too many headed goals though.

Position: Centre Forward
Age: 22
Club: Goytre United
Year of Study: 2nd
Course: BSc Accounting

Another product of the Swansea City Academy, Adam, joined the 1st team last year and hit the ground running. An excellent footballer and lethal finisher his goals will really drive the 1s to success. 

Name: Michael Davies
Position: Winger
Age: 18
Club: AFC Llwydcoed
Year of Study: 1st
Course: BSc Computer Science

Another fresher who has come into the 1s this month, Michael started well in the friendly versus USW and the first league game against Marjons. A tricky player who could be another key into unlocking defences for the 1s this year.
