The BUCS Football programme is the biggest, in terms of participation, teams and leagues numbers, in the whole of the BUCS programme. Over 450 men's and 150 women's teams enter across 100 leagues.

Football is part of the BUCS international programme, with the Women's team competing at the World University Summer Games, and both Men's and Women's teams competing at European University Competitions.
LUSL offer a Women's league and cup competition and both a Wednesday and Saturday league for Men.
BUCS also offers a fully fledged development team for university football, in partnership with The FA by having a Football Development Manager and Football Development Coordinator sat within BUCS.
The BUCS Football Development team works in partnership with key Football partners and stakeholders in the HE sector to provide students and members with development support and access to coaching, workforce and volunteering opportunities, participation programmes, NGB interventions and offers, disability sport initiatives plus funding and bursary opportunities. The Football Development team have put together a comprehensive 6 point offer for universities to use within their insitution. At the 2013 World University Summer Games (Universiade), both men's and women's teams competed in what is widely recognised as the second largest largest multisport Games in the World after the Olympics. Both teams medalled, with the women bringing home Gold, defeating Mexico 6-2 in a one sided final and the men Silver, narrowly losing to France in extra time.
University teams may also compete internationally at EUSA European Competitions.
