Barclays BUSA Tennis Individual Championships 2005/6 Report
Slovenian Matjaz Jurman (London Met) was the player of the tournament
at the recent Barclays British Universities Tennis Individual
Championships in Loughborough. On the final day the Men’s number one
seed collected the singles title defeating the in-form Thomas Pocock
(Brighton) 6-3 6-3. In the doubles Jurman partnered Robert Green to a
victory against the Bath combination of Graeme Hood and Alex Miotto.
In an enthralling women’s final it was Helen Fritche (UWIC) winning a
war of attrition against Catherine Gunn (Cambridge) in three sets 3-6,
6-1, 6-4. In the doubles Emily Quin and Jennifer Broughall (Bath)
triumphed over the Loughborough pairing of Kirsty McRae and Katy Shaw
in straight sets.
The event signalled a new positive direction for British tennis at
university level with many world-ranked players entering the event
along with prize money being on offer for the first time. This was
thanks to the new three-year sponsorship deal BUSA has signed with
Barclays.
