Barclays BUCS Tennis Individual Championships 2010
19-21 March 2010
Warwick University, University of Warwick Tennis Centre, Westwood Campus, Coventry, CV4 8UW
Press Release & Results
After victory in last weekends Barclays BUCS Tennis team championships in Sheffield – the London Met men were again out in force at the Individual Championships in Warwick. Bastian Gruendler played a storming first set in the men’s final against reigning champion and London Met compatriot Matjaz Jurman – and it was really disappointing all round when Jurman had to retire injured at the start of the second set.
That retiral also meant that Bastian missed the opportunity to test himself again against Matjaz in the men’s doubles.
Injuries aside – the London Met men’s team swept the board – winning gold and silver & bronze medals in the singles and gold and silver
in the doubles. Josh Miller from Loughborough picked up the remaining bronze medal after what was probably the match of the weekend
in his men’s singles semi final. He fought long and hard against the eventual champion Bastian – but couldn’t quite break through.
The Women’s events had been thrown open after the late withdrawal of the London Met girls players. Brunel student Claire Ricketts took full advanatge
of their absense by cruising through to the final and beating Sally Pearson from Durham to claim the title. Not to be downheartened, Sally then teamed
up with Lucy Scott to edge out Loughborough’s pair of Rebecca Scrivens and Jodie Bratchell in a very close 2 setter to take the women’s doubles title.
Congratulations also to our longest distance traveler - Claire Birnie from Robert Gordon – who made the journey from Aberdeen all the more worthwhile
by making it to the semi finals of the singles and praise too to Steph Parker from Northumbria - who went home with a shiny bronze medal as the other
losing semi finalist.
Congratulations to everyone involved in making this the biggest Barclays BUCS Individuals event ever … over 235 singles entries over 70 doubles
entries, 3 qualifying events and 1 finals weekend.
