Bath players complete clean sweep of Barclays BUCS tennis challenge titles
17/02/2009University of Bath tennis players completed a clean sweep of titles as the Barclays BUCS tennis challenge returned to the Sports Training Village at the weekend.
Kat Baker and Matt Leahy both retained their singles titles, while Baker partnered Kate Rodger to victory in the women’s doubles and Leahy teamed up with Jamie Whiteford in a triumphant men’s doubles partnership.
Sports Performance student Kat Baker, top seed in the women’s singles, took the title without dropping a set. Having worked her way trough to Sunday’s final, she overcame the number two seed, University of Bath Modern Languages and European Studies student Kate Rodger 6-1, 6-2 to retain her title.
The University of Bath pair also teamed up to win the round-robin women’s doubles competition, with fellow University of Bath pairing Steffi Colyer (Sport and Exercise Science) and Lara Crouch (Coach Education & Sports Development) coming second.
Matt Leahy won last year’s men’s singles title when he was a student at Exeter University, but is now training at the University of Bath. Seeded one, he also retained his title without dropping a set.
Leahy was pushed closest by number three seed Josh Miller from Loughborough in the final, eventually winning both sets, 7-5, 7-5.
Leahy also beat Miller in the men’s doubles final. Leahy and Jamie Whiteford, a student at Ralph Allen School who trains at the University, were seeded one with Loughborough’s Miller and Stuart Searle seeded two. Both pairs reached the final without encountering too many problems, where the University of Bath pair secured an emphatic 6-1, 6-1 victory.
