BUCS Badminton Individual Championships 2011
05/01/2012The BUCS Badminton Individual Championships is now the UK’s largest badminton tournament with 675 players competing in 719 matches. This year’s Championships took place over the weekend of 18-20 November at Nottingham University with the all five reigning champions looking to continue their domination of recent years.
However it was a debutant, Nathan D’Cruz from Brunel (above right) who stole the show in the men’s singles event winning gold at the first time of asking. Nathan, who plays for Middlesex County 1st team and is ranked sixth in England for Men’s singles, denied Lim Kenn of Leeds Met Carnegie a hatrick of titles by winning the final against Jamie Bonsells (Manchester) who for the second year running had to settle for silver.
Elsewhere, Sarah Milne was unable to break her Leeds Met Carnegie teammate Anita Raj Kaur’s hold on the women’s singles title. Anita has won this championship title for the last four years, a fantastic achievement but one bettered by Harry Wright (Leeds Met) who has now won the men’s doubles event for last six years, with five different partners. Harry’s astonishing feat is the first time that a title has been held for six years consecutive years and is one unlikely to be achieved again in the near future.
BUCS would like to thank all the volunteers associated with the event and Nottingham University sports centre staff.
