It is fair to say that neither team got off to a flying start in this game, which always promised to be a close encounter. Each team attempted to attack, but both sides’ defences were too strong to allow their opponents to have an opportunity to shoot.
Loughborough had the most chances in the first period but failed to convert any of these until the end of the half when Beckett tapped in the rebound after Durham’s keeper pulled off a dramatic save, but he could only parry the ball into the path of the Loughborough player.
Soon after Half Time, Loughborough made it 2-0 with a fine effort from Chris Griffiths to extend their lead.
Durham showed potential going forward but their failure to retain possession proved costly and the fast pace of the game took its toll on their players as the game drew to a close. Loughborough’s fitness levels appeared to be superior as they continued to dominate.
Both sides failed to make the most of the numerous short corners in the second half which could have made all the difference in this game; although it must be said that this was mainly down to the outstanding performance of both goal-keepers.
Durham did provide a late scare for Loughborough when they scored a goal with one minute remaining after Loughborough’s keeper saved well but could not clear the ball away.
The last few moments of this game were very tense, with both sets of supporters screaming for their sides to win, but in reality, the Durham supporters knew that it was too little too late.
Loughborough fought very hard for their win and defended their goal like champions. All credit to Durham for their efforts in what was a very good game.
