BUCS Men's Futsal enters quarter final stages
16/03/2011Another cracking day of BUCS Futsal took place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield today as the final rounds of group games were concluded.
In the men’s Futsal Championships - Teesside, hotly tipped to retain the Championship, had to settle for second place in Group 1 as Sheffield took top spot by beating last year’s runners-up, UWE Hartpury, 4-2. UWE Hartpury will go into the men’s Trophy this year along with Birmingham who finished on three points.
Elsewhere, Leeds Met finished top of Group 2 as they beat Brighton 2-0 in the group decider at the top. The defeat was Brighton’s first in the Championships, but they will still be hoping to reach this year’s final if they can get past an undefeated Sheffield side. East Anglia had two great results by drawing 4-4 with Leeds Met and beating Bournemouth 4-2 to finish 3rd. Bournemouth hammered Hertfordshire 8-0 which sent them through to the Trophy finals.
In Group 3, surprise package Sheffield Hallam continued where they left off by winning both of their games and maintained their 100% record. They managed to bag twelve goals and are being tipped to cause a few upsets. Loughborough finished second on goal difference to Gloucestershire who finished 3rd, crucially beating Imperial 4-3 earlier in the day. Imperial will go through to the Trophy finals as they beat Cranfield on day one.
The only other side with a perfect start to this year’s BUCS is Northumbria in Group 4. They beat Brunel 7-5 before edging in their final game against Bath 1-0. Despite losing, Bath won their other game today and will be delighted at progressing to the Championship finals. Brunel WL finished 3rd, six points clear of Plymouth who qualify for the Trophy finals despite not winning a game.
BUCS Men’s Futsal Championship Quarter Finals for tomorrow: Sheffield v Brighton; Leeds Met v Teesside; Sheffield Hallam v Bath; Northumbria v Loughborough.
